Last week, after much frustration, I purchased a $52 Hasbro Baby Alive Wets & Wiggles Boy Doll, together with a $28.50 Hasbro Baby Alive Wets 'N Wiggles Doll (girl doll), for my grandson. In twelve days or so, his mommy, now "great with children," and his daddy, will bring home boy and girl twins from the hospital.
Why would the boy baby doll from Hasbro cost twice as much as the girl? I looked all over to find more equivalent and cheaper prices. I did not see this pair of Berenguer dolls, or I would have gotten them, at matched prices, looking *very* much like newborns, and costing $25 less, combined. True, they don't wet or wiggle or coo -- my daughter tells me that they are not activating all that stuff on the Hasbro dolls anyway. As to other stores online having twins, or one each at the same price, I could not find any, except for African American twins, carried by a couple of stores. Otherwise, they were out of stock of twin Wets & Wiggles dolls. Enough of my frustration. Here's a review of twin baby dolls that are anatomically correct.
Why anatomically correct, you ask? My reasoning is that my grandson is going to be watching eagle-eyed as his daddy and his mommy take care of their newborn twins. He's going to want to know why the girl is not like the boy, and why the boy is like him, and so forth. Wouldn't it confuse things further if his supposedly boy doll is not like him or like his new brother? Wouldn't it help to recognize the ok differences in girl babies if his girl twin doll is like his new sister? So I figured. It may go differently in other families.
Since I live at a distance, and would not be presenting these dolls to my grandson at the same time, they had to come in one package. Perhaps the (real) babies won't come home from the hospital together, but still the effect on my grandson would not be the same if first one of *his* came and then the other. Adding to the cost was that Amazon Prime shipping was possible with the boy doll, but not with the girl doll, and only one supplier, All4mygirls, had both dolls in stock, would ship "expedited" and did so, on a Saturday. No, nobody else in the first 30 listings on Google had both boy and girl dolls together. So there was additional shipping charge.
I wanted anatomically correct dolls, and these Berenguer dolls fill the bill, cost a lot less than I paid for the Hasbro dolls, can be dressed from the smallest baby things around as hand-me-downs, or in preemie clothes. With the Wets & Wiggles dolls, there's the added expense of landfill with plastic diapers, if the added realism is desired.
My grandson is thrilled to have his own babies; he's been talking about "when the babies come out of Mommy's tummy" for three months, now. Sometimes we don't explain everything to him, or the idea that the babies won't be ready to play doesn't register.
Thinking about toddler / kindergarten boys, they are more likely to get exposed to playing with dolls at pre-school or in kindergarten. My son-in-law is equally involved in child and baby care, so he's a role model, and baby care is not something only for Mommies (as Mattel has in its "Little Mommies" line, which has some cheaper twins. Grandson is doing what Daddy does, and what Mommy does. Very natural to him.
Since he's all boy, loves trucks, loves to kick around a soccer ball, and is very physically active, the case for him also playing with newborn dolls goes to future possibilities as NICU doctor or pediatrician or ob/gyn delivering babies. Or focusing on baby care in some other health care profession. Or sharing in taking care of his own babies someday.
My hat's off to Berenguer for its presentation of these 14" dolls. It's not hard to find out that they are anatomically correct. I wish, for example, that the cheaper Mattel "Little Mommies" line would expressly say that their boy-girl twins are just clothed in pink and blue -- as I suspect from the name of the product line!

The mini dolls. as well as the larger newborn dolls above, are scented; maybe that's okay, maybe not. It would be cheaper still, and easier for a smaller toddler to carry and play with. (My grandson is 3 3/4 years old.) With these mini-dolls, the Amazon website does not specify whether they are anatomically correct or neutered. If it matters, call to find out what is being shipped.
Some research on the web at pattycakedoll.com and elsewhere indicates that a variety of ethnicities for these 9.5" mini dolls is available -- African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Asian. Also there's the possibility that you can get either anatomically correct, or (dare I say it) incorrect, dolls in this size.
And the next question IS: What does my grandson name his baby dolls.
