Who didn't love Shaun of the Dead? Well, ok I can name a couple of people, but nevermind that. When figures from the movie were announced, I was really excited, and planned on getting them. I lucked out and won this 12" talking Shaun at a Jesusmas party a couple of years ago. It looked great, and I proudly put him on top of my entertainment center as soon as I got home.
Well, it does look great- there's no denying who this is when you see the figure. Anyone who's seen the movie will know this is Shaun. It looks just like Simon Pegg, and he has a serious look on his face, like he's ready to take out some zombies. He's holding the cricket bat in one hand, and a bouquet of flowers in the other. His arms can move up and down at the shoulder, and he attaches to the base via a peg on it and a hole in his foot. What I thought was really cool was the record box behind him, and how it comes with records to put in it, and it even opens and closes. Yep, they did an outstanding job on the sculpt on this sucker.
Unfortunately, there are two problems, one minor and one major. The minor problem is that the paint work on Shaun isn't that great, and this was a common problem. Mine had a huge chip off the tip of his nose missing, so there was this black spot on the end. 'very distracting. There's also a lot of bleeding and unclean work on the finer details, like his eyes and hands. But if you can see these in a store before buying, and care about that, you can check the figure yourself to make sure you get a good one. The big thing I didn't like with this figure though, was the talking feature. Yes, that's Shaun talking and not some other actor, but the lines? None of them are funny. With all of the hilarious one-liners in the movie, not a single one was given to this figure. What's the point of giving freakin' Shaun a talking feature if he's going to say "We need to get somewhere safe"? They really dropped the ball on this feature. One final thing though is that over time, Shaun will begin to lean forward or back, and you'll probably need to tape his feet down because the figure's pretty heavy, and the base isn't solid enough to support it.
If you can get a figure with good paint, bump up the rating to 4/5 stars. But the stupid talking feature takes a star away no matter what. It sucks when someone who loves the movie sees this, pushes the button to make him talk, has a smile on their face- ready to laugh at something funny, and goes through the couple of lines and gets nothing out of it. It doesn't take away from how good the figure looks though, and any fan of Shaun of the Dead should have this. Maybe they'll re-issue the figure and give him at least one funny line.
