While all of the Wild Things figures by McFarlane look just like they do in the book, Bernard is the one that impresed me the most, looking like they somehow used magic on the illustration and just put it in 3D. He also seems to be the biggest of the figures as far as weight goes, and with that stylish pose, you have another winner in this series. And get this- he's fairly sturdy too!
Bernard is great. McFarlane got his colors perfectly, and just looking at this guy will make you wonder how they did such a perfect figure. He's got the standard Maurice Sendak ink scratches all over him, just like the other Wild Thing figures, and has articulated arms and feet. I love the pose they chose for him, because while he had Max on his back in this pose in the book, here it looks like he's playing bass guitar. If you can find a guitar in the right scale for him, it'd ad some coolness to him. To me, he feels the heaviest of the figures, so be careful when handling him because if he fell on your foot or a pet, it'd b toast. As with the others, he comes with a base to help him stand, though if you mess around with the arms and feet a little, he could stand on his own just fine.
Incredibly, unlike the other figures, Bernard's not as prone to breaking. The only common breakage story with him is the right arm popping off, but not breaking so it'd need to be glued back on. My daughter had this figure as well, and when his arm broke, it as at the joint, so all I had to do was snap it back onto the peg. His feet and legs seem to be attatched well, and I don't have too many worries there. But the paint used for his feet does seem to be a bit cheaper than the paint on the rest of him, and if you rub it with your fingers a bit, it starts to come off. But these are more of collectible figures than ones to be played with, so that shouldn't be a problem for most people buying these.
For some reason, Bernard tends to be one of the two least popular Wild Thing figures (the other being Emil), but he's one of the best made. Due to his unpopularity, that makes him a bit less expensive compared to the others, so jump on it now before more people realize how cool he is.
