Ok. So i bought this item for my then 4yr old dtr last year for Christmas. I didn't get this particular package deal; instead, I purchased everything seperately. I have everythign in this package EXCEPT the chair and the apron. So, I will reveiw the items that I have.
To begin, the house itself is amazing. It did take a few attempts to get the darn thing together (i may have gotten it on the first try if i had read the directions more carefully). Once we got that together though, everything else was cake. The house is like a painted fabric almost, that is stretched over a metal frame. This makes the whole house (both halves) very light weight and easy to move around. This is a plus since you can "nest" the two halfs within each other and it isnt too heavy for kiddo's to move around. Also, the fabric can be removed and washed if say, the dog mistakes the corner of the house for a tree... :) It's sturdy enough, too. Our cat lounges on the "roof" where the chimny is, and so far, it has held her weight. No bending or denting. The door opens up and secures again using a magnet which is very well sewn in and the little windows have mesh netting. The painting or print or whatever it is that makes the house so colorful is very pretty and quaint. I did not find it to be abstract or ugly in any way. The colors are very girlish but not so icky pink that you just want to puke! :D
As for the little "appliances", they are made from a sturdy cardboard like wood. I dont think it's wood, but more cardboard. But the cardboard is very thick and not like a cardboard box type material. It really is sturdy. The appliances are fairly light weight as well and were (at age 4) and are (at age 5) easy for my dtr to move around. We have the sink, stove, washer, baby bed and changing table. The sink is basic molded plastic fixtures with a water basin. I dont recal any moving parts on the sink. THe stove has knobs that click when you turn them to turn on the "burners". The washer has a little clear door on it that opens to a simple shelf where kids can put doll clothes (or in my dtr's case, french fries). The top is flat. The baby bed is like a little bassenet. It has slight rockers on the bottom so that the bed rocks a tiny bit. It will fit a standard sized baby doll, probably around 12 inches or so... Anyway, the changing table is pretty basic. It's a table with sides and has a slightly depressed surface and comes with a little mat for changing baby dolls.
As for size, this is a considerably sized toy. When the two halves are put together in the shape of a house, the total space is around 12 square feet - it's around 4ft long on each of the four sides. But, when nested, its half that. I have the house set up in an "L" shape in teh corner of my dtr's room. We dont generally let her move it around since her room is fairly small, but in a bigger playroom or outside, I dont think the size would be an issue.
When i purchased this product, i also got a play cooking set and veggies (including french fries) from Target so that it would give off more of a dramatic play feel. It has been an amazing addition to our dtr's playroom. I bought this product after watching an episode of John and Kate Plus 8. If it can survive 6 toddlers, it will definately stand up to my 1 kindergartener!! :D
I LOVE this product and would deffinatly recommend it to my friends and other parents!! :D
