Several years ago, I saw these toys at F.A.O.Schwarz in San Francisco. Not long afterwards, I tried to buy one for myself. But none could be found. Now an explanation is at hand. Commentary on the label reads, "Five years after their original run, for a limited engagement, McFarlane Toys is proud to re-release the original "Yellow Submarine" toy line." So that explains it. In the interim, I bought Corgi's Yellow Submarine. The Corgi Yellow Submarine is made of metal. Each of two small fins can be pushed down. When the front fin is pushed, a hatch pops up, and from the hatch there pops up Ringo and George. When the rear fin is pushed, the rear hatch pops up, and Paul and John spring up. When pushed, the tripartite periscope rotates (counterclockwise when the sub is pushed forwards). The Corgi toy features one rotating propellor. The metal Corgi Yellow Submarine is a superb souvenir of "the 60s." It is a treasure. Anyway, back to the plastic McFarlane toy under review. At last, it is available on the market again. Ringo as well as the sub are bigger than one might expect, and sturdier than one might expect. Also, Ringo's nose is bigger than one might expect. A wind-up crank (on the sub; not on Ringo's nose) makes two propellors rotate. The rear rudder can be moved to left or right. A row of portholes or vents lines each side of the sub. The portholes or vents stick out, resembling two rows of suction cups. The toy comes with a clear plastic stand, in case you want to sit the sub to it. Ringo's head swivels, as do his arms and wrists. His feet (shoes) are oversized, lending a comical effect. The feet swivel too. The tiny rings on Ringo's tiny fingers are each painted a different color. (For those interested, the rings fail to swivel). The colors and painting on Ringo and the Yellow Submarine are a wonder to behold. I also purchased Paul. Paul comes with a blue-faced creature having painted-on eyelashes resembling a pheasant's feathers, and a three-dimensional tail sticking out that resembles a cluster of pink grapes.
Regarding "educational value," these toys are highly appropriate in supplementing any child's agenda of education, as it applies to American culture or American pop-culture. An agenda of American culture might be expected to include exposure to a number of Beatles' albums, and kid-compatible albums by Herman's Hermits, the Supremes, the Lovin' Spoonful, the Drifters, the Mamas and Papas, the Who, the first Crosby, Stills, & Nash album, Dionne Warwick, the Coasters, Simon & Garf., the Four Seasons, Jan & Dean, and the Byrds. Being as the Beatles reside at the top of the pop music pyramid, and being as children throughout America like the tune "Yellow Submarine" more than most other Beatles tunes (don't ask me why they do), the Yellow Submarine toy makes a consistent supplement to a child's introduction to American musical pop culture.
