Bachmann Trains The DeWitt Clinton Ready-to-Run HO Train Set Review

I am 57 years old and building my first model railroad in my garage. I still have my HO train set from childhood but wanted somethiong different to start a new. This will be the center piece for my new Railroad City. Remember to be gentle with this product. It has many very tiny pieces and is delicate. This is not a toy for young children without adult supervision.

Named after the father of the Erie Canal, the DeWitt Clinton made its maiden run on August 9, 1831. As one of the earliest steam operated carriers in America, the DeWitt Clinton is truly unique in railroading history. With its passengers riding in standard stagecoach bodies mounted on railroad wheels, the sight of the DeWitt Clinton was just as startling in 1831 as it would be today.

PlanToys Road & Rail Play Set - Railway Station Review

PlanToys Road and Rail Play Set - Railway Station

Overall, I'm really happy we got my daughter a Plan Toys train set for Christmas. She always loves playing with them places we go (stores, children's museum, etc.) and this toy is getting a lot of play in our home now. We purchased this set along with the PlanToys Road & Rail Play Set - Transportation and I have to say that the two are a good pairing. They compliment each other nicely, giving us a nice selection of both railway track and road pieces to construct with. We also got the Plan Toys table and a play mat to complete our set.
We're big fans of Plan Toys in our house. We have a lot of their products as I find that they make some of the most creative and durable wooden toys on the market, that being said, I have a few issues with this train set, but there are some pros. Let me list both:
Pros:
- Compatible with other wooden train set tracks such as Melissa and Doug, Thomas the Train and Ikea
- Beautiful, sturdy and well-constructed
- Comes with a nice assortment of tracks and road pieces, two trains (with three cars each), two cars, a bus, a handful of people, some road signs and some trees
- All the items pack up and fit nicely inside the station so you can put it away easily without needing to purchase extra containers
Cons:
- When folded down, the side of the station that lays on the ground is painted with nice windows but the side remaining up on the back is unpainted
- My railway station was missing a couple of holes for supporting the pylons when open. We drilled them ourselves to avoid dealing with a return and it's fine now.
- The trees, road signs, and lights tend to tip over (they need larger bases)
- When the track and road pieces are set up in the recommended configuration according to the instructions (see also the photo), it doesn't fit properly on the Plan Toys table
- It's unclear specifically what pieces you are getting unless you're looking at the box. I couldn't find any kind of listing anywhere on the Plan site or here on Amazon about specifically which pieces come in the box.
- The station itself is a bit big to leave it set up on the table all the time. It's probably a better piece if you aren't using a train table, but want an attractive box to keep the pieces in when not in use.
I know, that sounds like a lot of cons, but I don't regret my purchase and my daughter is having a blast with this set and I think it works great, especially augmented with the other set I referenced above.

PlanToys Road & Rail Play Set - Adventure Review

PlanToys Road and Rail Play Set - Adventure

I love Plan Toys and have puchased many of them over the years. While I have been happy with most of their products, once in a while, we are disappointed. My son loves playing with the wooden train sets at peoples homes we visit, so we wanted to start his own for Christmas. After looking all over, I decided on this one because it was compatable with the Plan City roads, which we also liked, and would try to add to over time. First, I didn't realize that all the tracks are not double sided like other wooden brands so that the pieces are flippable to make more configurations. Because of this, you can really only build the included plan and not much else which doesn't make this set very versatile, and my almost three year old (and his five year old brother) has to have help putting it together. Then during play, the mountain tracks are bumped and easily knocked apart. The pieces are not very uniform in height and width, which was disappointing, and the included trees will not stand very well on carpet. In addition, after only playing with the set a few times, one of the curved tracks has already split apart (and my son is not a rough player). Overall, it is a very cool set, but definately for older children, and if I'd realized how it compares to other sets we've seen, I would probably not have chosen this one. The quality we find in most toys from this manufacturer was just lacking in the set we received.

This engine runs like a dream, and talk about powerful! I bought this as a gift for my husband, who promptly set up the track and hooked up every other car he has to it. 11 cars it pulled without a groan, complaint or strain. Bachmann rules!

A colorful locomotive commemorating the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. The most widely used steam locomotive in North America between 1850 and 1880, the classic American was considered obsolete by 1900, when the need for larger engines became acute. Small numbers of 4 4 0s, however, continued to be built until the late 1940s, and a few were still in service until the early 1960s. More than 25,000 of them had been produced.

94601 Curved Track G Review

Hi,
What can you say, if you break a piece of your Bachmann Garden G scale railroad track, this is the place to go. Hammond's provided me great service, and sent the track priority mail. It arrived very quickly.
BUT and it's a BIG BUT, they don't include a track clip. If you are replacing track, keep the old clip. If you are extending track, this may be the best deal but you'll need to find the clips that hold the track together elsewhere.
Overall, five star! Just be armed with knowledge. Oh, and I only gave it two stars on durability, because Bachmann track is cheap and cheezy! It's no reflection on the seller. If you want real track for outdoor apps, go with LGB.

PlanToys Roundhouse Review

PlanToys Roundhouse
Average Reviews:

We recently got the Roundhouse as companion to our train set. Somehow I missed that this piece was available earlier or we would have bought it before. My son is very pleased to put his trains to sleep each night Nice sturdy construction and attractive design. The doors are really nicely designed. and can flip either way. The scale is correct for other Plan Toys road and rail sets too. It isn't clear in the picture but it comes with a substantial wooden track piece to connect to the tracks.

Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway - Breakdown Train Learning Curve Review

Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway - Breakdown Train Learning Curve

Another reviewer mentioned that the flatbed isn't wide enough to hold other trains. That's definitely true and very frustrating. You might be able to carefully balance another train on the flatbed, but it falls off as soon as you move it. My son doesn't even play with the flatbed, although he will occasionally use the crane to pull trains onto the track or along the track. Other than that, it's as well-made as all the other Thomas Wooden Railway items we have.

Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Stanley Review

Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Stanley
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son is crazy about Thomas (as most 2 yr old boys are) and we have been rapidly building his train collection. If you have or plan to get the movie "The Great Discovery" then Stanley is a must. I believe that is the only movie in which Stanley is featured- but he is a MAIN character (most of the plot is focused around Stanley). If you don't have that movie, then there really probably isn't a need to spend the money on this character. Since my son loves to watch that movie every chance he gets, he is naturally a huge fan of Stanley and plays with him every day. He is well made/ durable- will withstand much rough play! (In our experience all of the Thomas wooden trains have been).
If you are new to the Thomas line of toys and movies/shows, I'll give you a little more info... I happen to run into many people in stores that are just starting out with Thomas and with so many choices they have no idea where to start.
I hope this helps-
My hubby and I find the "morals" of the stories (or at least how they execute the arguments between characters) pretty inappropriate in almost all of the Thomas TV shows. But we have found some of the movies (especially the newer ones) are much better narrated and written. We were happy that the movie "The Great Discovery" has little-to-none of the content that the TV shows have (the content that makes us cringe). We don't allow our son to watch the Thomas TV programs, just our pre-approved movies- and of course he wants to watch them a million times in a row (as most kids love to do). So I feel that the movies are good for entertainment and for our son's character identification/recognition and such.
Which characters to start with??
All of the movies feature "the 8 main characters" and a myriad of other less main characters, and usually feature between 1-3 main "guest" characters to the plot (which differs in EACH movie). Meaning they are often featured only in ONE video, never to be seen again, but hold a large part of that movie's plot (like a main guest star).
So once you purchase any movie, expect to want to purchase about 3 new characters- which your child will think are his new friends. My son loves to recreate (act out) the movie as he watches it.
Again for anyone new to the line, you may find this a helpful place to start: the Main 8 characters ALWAYS featured are: Thomas, Percy, James, Gordon, Henry, Toby, Emily, & Edward. Less main characters always featured: Harold (the Helicopter) and Sir Topham Hatt. Other often featured are: Bertie the Bus, Harvey, & Rocky.
My son happens to love a few more obscure characters like: Mighty Mack, Madge (the flatbed truck), Jack (tractor), & George (the Steamroller).
Since the Thomas wooden collection is very large and very pricey, I would start with the Main characters, and pick a movie or two and purchase the main "guests" featured in that movie(s), and wait to see the additional ones that will grab your child's attention, you might be surprised at the ones they like (as we have been). Although, I have never felt the urge to buy/collect them all (since there are just too many), we still somehow have built a large collection! So as many others warn.... it does get addicting! I have found this collection to be well worth the money, but I highly suggest you purchase a great train table/ track set (like the Imaginarium one from Toys R US- a super buy) to play on! I have never seen my son happier- or play longer with anything!

Stanley is the new tank engine on Sodor, introduced in "The Great Discovery" and everyone's best friend. There's nothing he wouldn't do to help. And if he couldn't help, he'd find someone who could or would. When you're a friend in need, Stanley is a friend indeed!

Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Emily Review

Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Emily
Average Reviews:

If your child enjoys acting out the Thomas & Friends series, then they should know that Emily is one of the friendlier engines. She is an old-fashioned engine, with large inner wheels. She is the first female steam engine, apart from Lady, who only appeared in the Thomas & The Magic Railroad movie. She was given 2 green coaches after saving Oliver and Toad when they were stuck on the tracks. Before she had her coaches, she borrowed Annie and Clarabelle from Thomas, which made all the other engines sad.
Emily was just released last year in "Emily's New Coaches" and already, she has a major role, mainly because Thomas & Friends doesn't show female engines very often. I have recommended that Learning Curve sells Emily's coaches, because I don't think Thomas will approve of Emily always taking Annie & Clarabelle!
