Quest Aerospace Big Betty Model Rocket Kit Review

The Big Betty is the Quest version of the Estes Big Bertha, with only the three fin setup and ill-fitting nose cone to distinguish itself from the competition. There really isn't much of a competition as both rockets make excellent additions to a growing rocket fleet as a first "big" rocket. Quest gets extra points for including Kevlar as a part of the recovery system. Estes gets points for the stuffer tube that keeps the parachute from falling too far down into the body tube. The biggest Quest advantage might be in the price, as I usually see the Big Betty priced quite a bit less than her more famous sister.

Quest Aerospace Model Rocket Launch System Review

Quest Aerospace Model Rocket Launch System

Quest has put together a launching system, which includes the electronic wiring, the launch pad, and the launch rod.
This is a good basic launching system. It uses a single 9-volt battery to ignite engines. It is a good system for most (smaller) rockets.
The pad itself is made of lightweight plastic. While very portable due to its light weight and ability to disassemble the unit, I have found the pad to be a bit unstable when a larger rocket is used. I wish there was a bit more anchoring weight to the tripod pad to make the whole pad more stable. There is no way to anchor the pad to the ground, and if you launch ontopof sod grass (instead of hard ground), the pad will not be as stable as desired. I give the launcher 3 stars because of its relative instability with larger rockets.

(Update: In order to make the launch pad more stable, I drilled holes in each of the launch pod legs and now anchor the pods with spikes. This prevents the pod from moving when the rocket launches. I can also launch larger rockets because the base is stable. 4-7-11).
