Scrabble Upwords Review

I am an elementary school teacher and a child's vocabulary level has a high correlation to their reading comprehension. In a time of dropping vocabulary levels, this is a quick and easy game that has students checking the dictionary and expanding their vocabulary in a fun way. (I allow them to use the dictionary to check words or "find" words as they play.) I also "allow" them to expand to Scrabble and Upwords when they want more challenge. Students who never opted to play vocabulary games are now playing both of these.
I bought one game initially and just bought more so the whole class can play at one time. This is one way to expand their knowledge that they think is a reward.

Super Scrabble Deluxe Edition Review

My wife and I play scrabble regularly. We started using Super Scrabble instead of the standard game a couple of years ago and reallly love it. The only problem was that since the game is twice the size of the original scrabble, it took us more than one sitting to finish a game. The standard flat board was easily bumped and often our games were ruined by someone bumping the board. I even contacted the Scrabble people to see if I could get a deluxe board (with the rails) 2 years ago and was told that it was not being made...
and NOW here it is. no more ruined games from someone bumping the board!
We love the Deluxe game.
Only (minor) problem is the seam where the board folds does not always lie flat so the letters in that column can move around.
all in all, a wonderful addition to the scrabble game.

I love Scrabble and bought this item to replace an older set. I'd give it five stars, and it probably should still get five since the game is the same, but.... Here are my aesthetic 'issues' with this newer release of the flat board and wood tile version:
1) the playing area is not centered in the folding board; very displeasing
2) the tiles are made of lighter wood (pine instead of oak? I don't know my woods, but this one is light)
3) the tile trays are less rounded and more squared-off in profile (yes, this is very picky)
This game mas previously been produced by both Milton-Bradley and Shelchow & Righter, and both did a better job than Hasbro with this one. Consider the small travel version with a plastic grid and small, thick wood tiles -- even for home use, that's how disappointing this one is.

The best thing about this version of the Scrabble game is that you can literally play it anywhere. The tiles are a bit difficult to handle so you have to be a little careful with them, but this little baby is small and packs easily. I have played it a lot on planes and have taken it on vacation with me to play with people when I get bored. Its portability is its best feature. Just be careful not to lose the tiles.

My granddaughter is 4 1/2 and she enjoyed this game. We found that it is not great for the car, because if you hit a bump the cards can fall out of the slots, but we did enjoy it once we got to the beach and it was small, so it was easy to pack.

Balderdash Review

Balderdash
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had played Balderdash many years ago in high school. I am now in college and recently I had an urge to buy this game and enjoy it once again. I have a decent number of friends of whom I play many games with on many occasions. Some of our favorites are Apples to Apples Party Box - The Game of Hilarious Comparisons and Cranium. We all have a lot of fun with these party games and have been enjoying them for years. However, I decided to try something new. This was when I remembered Balderdash.
Balderdash is a simple enough game, played with as little as two players (though I would recommend a minimum of four to really enjoy the game). The concept is as follows: A card is picked with one of five categories: Words, Initials, Movie Titles, People, and Laws. Each of these are things no one has ever heard of. Every round, one person reads the word/clue (this is the Dasher) to the others, who then do their best to write down what they think the definition/plot/etc. is. This is where everyone gets creative. You could write down a funny answer, a serious answer, or just anything. The idea is the trick everyone into voting for you. Once everyone writes down their submission, they turn in their little pieces of paper and the Dasher reads everyone's submissions to the group, randomly, with the REAL definition hidden among the rest. Everyone then votes on what they think the real one is. If you trick some people into picking your submission, you get points, which translate to moves. That's it.
The game's fun comes from the wacky submissions and the art of how you write your submissions. It's a game where the fun doesn't come from winning but from the laughs had by all. I've found that the actual definition is even weirder than what people write. People come up with some pretty crazy stuff, too, and if you have some creative friends you can have a really good time.
A complain I have about the game, though, is that it can be a bit short (a full run can last as little as 20-30 minutes) and there are not many slips of paper, as well as the fact that no pencils were included. However, once the paper runs out, you could easily use normal paper. Still, a minor inconvenience.
Don't let this deter you from getting this game, though. It is a very fun game and there are a LOT of clues given with the game to ensure that you will not see a repeat clue for quite some time. With a lot of creative people this game has the potential to be a real big hit. And because there are definitions, there is even a (slight) bit of learning, though this is NOT an educational game and probably shouldn't be treated as such.
Overall, this is a fun game that is best enjoyed with a decent-sized group of creative people. The supply limitations may deter a few, but it really shouldn't. Any problems with supplies can be overcome with standard paper and pencils. Overall, I very much recommend this game.

Balderdash the classic bluffing game has gone beyond hilarious. With outrageous questions that now include the category Laughable Laws play the game that asks your friends to call your bluff. Each game card lists People Words Initials Movies and Laws that you've probably never heard of. But that's where the fun really begins because you get to make up an answer that's as silly or as serious as you want! Now mix in the real answer and vote. You score points for guessing correctly and for bluffing the other players. So grab the bull by the horns and play Balderdash the game that's hilarious beyond belief!

Out of the Box Publishing, Inc. Word On The Street - The Hilarious Tug Of Words Review

Out of the Box Publishing, Inc. Word On The Street - The Hilarious Tug Of Words
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Take all your consonants except for the ridiculous ones like Q, X and Z. Put them on your satisfyingly hefty bakelite tiles. Now, make a long game board, like a 4-lane highway with a divider strip just wide enough and long enough to accommodate all of your happily hefty letter tiles. Next, get together a deck of 216, often surprisingly laugh-provoking, double-sided category cards, like: "The Brand of Clothing Worn by One of the Players," and "Something that is Wasted," and "Something Used by Scuba Divers," and "A Word that Describes a Car Crash," "A Title Used for Males but not for Females." Add a cardholder and sand timer. And those are all the ingredients needed for a new and notably Major FUN word game called "Word on the Street" from those frequently Major FUN game publishers, Out of the Box.
Everything, of course, except for the rules. And there in lies the tickle.
Designed by Jack Degnan to give a couple or a couple of teams of word-lovers ample opportunity to demonstrate their brilliance and/or befudlement, the game is a contest to see who, in 30 seconds, can think of a word that 1) fits the category, and 2) has as many as possible of the letters still in play, many of which are doubled - as in MISSISSIPPI which would allow us to move the M one lane closer to us, the P two lanes closer, and the S clear off the board, which would put us one letter ahead. Only 7 more to go and we win!
Though Mississippi would in deed be a coup, it would not be considered a valid response to the category "A Brand of Clothing Worn by One of the Players." To which the best I could do at this time is probably MAIDENFORM (getting to move M twice as well as a D, N, F and R once). Or would MASSIMO with its two M's and two S's be better?
As the game progresses, different letters, and hence different words become more desirable, offensively or defensively, so the challenge keeps on changing. The best word might not have the most double letters in it if some letters only one space away from us, or more enticing yet, one space away from the opponent's goal. The 30-second timer keeps the game moving apace. The cards keep the game surprising and funny. The tiles are large enough for all to read. The board works perfectly in directing player's attention to the strategically most valuable letters. All this makes the game absorbing and delightfully tense, from the moment the first card is read until one team finally manages to capture the eighth letter.
Recommended for 2 to 12 players old enough to appreciate each other's verbal mastery.

Boggle Review

Boggle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This version of Boggle is not nearly as good as the classic version. If you can find back stock of the old version at some out-of-the-way toy store, get that instead. This version has much, much smaller dice, so they are much harder to see, and it doesn't work for groups of more than three or so, and will not work at all for people trying to crane their necks across a normal-sized dinner table. There is a lid that prevents the dice from getting out of the box, but that cover has almost no clearance. This means that the dice tend to stay in the same slot, and you don't have too many games pass before you're seeing the same letter combinations. It really takes the fun out of the game. Additionally, the cover is easily scuffed up by the white paint on each die, so this version has only a very short shelf life before it becomes even harder to see the letters. Yes, the incorporated timer is nice, but how hard could it have been to include one without ruining the board?
The game itself is a lot of fun, plenty of opportunities for learning to spell in English or other languages, which is why I give it 2 stars. In a competition with classic Boggle, this is a zero-stars product, no question. Possibly it would be ok as a travel game, but not for game night.

Great game for school-age children and higher. My grandchildren and I have so much fun trying to outsmart one another. They really keep me thinking. We play every time they visit which is every 2 weeks. It keeps their minds thinking and is very challenging for us all. Even the younger ones attempt to play. I am very delighted with the purchase of Scrabble Slam.

With Scrabble Slam Deluxe a four-letter word is laid out on the table (barn, left, tour, etc) and the remaining cards are dealt out to each player. Each player then takes it in turn to lay down a single card anywhere on the four-letter word. For instance, player 1 may spell barn and player two lays down a y to make it yarn.As the game progresses it becomes more challenging to make words, so play your cards with caution! The person with the fewest cards at the end of the game wins! For 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up.

This version of Scattergories is similar to ASAP, a game that came out in the 90s. This version is easier to carry around and doesn't involve writing. You don't need pencils and you don't have to get those pads that come with the other version. This version is good to play in the car with the kids which makes it a good travel game.

Clue The Classic Edition Review

Clue The Classic Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Clue is one of those transcendent games that's maintained it's viability for over 50 years. Why? It still feels fresh and is flat-out fun to play.
Here's a quick synopsis for the unfamiliar: There's been a murder at the mansion and you're a character in a race to figure out who did it, what weapon they used, and which room the murder occurred in. Be the first to get your accusation right and you win the game.
The suspect, weapon, and room combo changes every game through a brilliantly simple process involving cards and a CONFIDENTIAL case file envelope. It takes about 5 minutes to set up and usually between 20 - 40 minutes to play. Clue can be played with as few as 2 people, but 3 - 6 is ideal as it adds layers to uncovering clues (without increasing the complexity). The game states it's appropriate for ages 8 and up, and my 8-year-old understands the concepts well enough to have lots of fun and often be competitive (if I leave my cut-throat self at the door). The learning curve for this game is really quick, especially if you have a seasoned player helping explain the rules. If not, don't worry. You'll be solving murders in no time.
The "Classic Edition" bills itself as having the "Original Suspects, Rooms, & Weapons". (There have been a few updated editions released that included extra weapons and rooms.) If you grew up on Clue or are familiar with editions released prior to 1990, this will very likely be the format you're familiar with. The character pawns are stained wood and all weapons are metallic. The only difference I detected from my 1980s edition was the artwork on the cards. It looks as though the manufacturer resurrected the original 1949 artwork as well, giving the game a very classic, whodunit-y feel. All in all, the stellar gameplay remains the same.
In addition to rating fun and durability at 5-stars, I gave Clue's educational value a 4-star rating. Why? This game effortlessly teaches logic and deductive reasoning. It may seem funny to be wholeheartedly recommending a game that centers around a murder as a wholesome family-friendly activity, but oddly enough, it is. The "murder" aspect of the game is very downplayed, almost an afterthought. The entire fun and point of the game comes from the discoveries of the "who", the "where", and the "what" details.
If you're looking for a fun board game to add to the collection, or relive some fond game-playing memories, I can't recommend Clue highly enough. And take it from me: Clue is best played on a dark and stormy night...
;-)
