Wonder Dice Review

Wonder Dice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased the Wonder Dice Block set for our son when he was about 5 months old and was finally showing interest in picking things up and playing with them. After 3 months of fairly heavy use, I can say that this was worth every penny. If the bright colors, mirrors, and multiple different types of fabric were not enough to keep him entertained, the fact that most of these blocks also make sounds (jingling, squeaking, etc) certainly would be. Parents will especially appreciate the fact that these blocks are nice and soft, making them less of a problem to worry about when your budding genius discovers that he/she can throw them (into walls, furniture, windows, etc.). As a tip - the little fabric "tassle" on the top of the cone is especially good for tickling noses!

Hasbro did an excellent job by finally releasing a Coast Guard G.I. Joe in 1999 -- The 35th Aniversary of the "Real American Hero". This figure has to be one of my favorite G.I. Joes this year, with my all time favorite being the Delta Soldier. If you love tons accessories then you must own this particular G.I. Joe. 'Coastie' G.I. Joe comes loaded with, an M-16 A2, a shotgun, a faux leather holster with a sidearm, a life jacket, a radio with MIC, a clipboard with paper,a pair of binoculars, a camera with a long telephoto lens, and a huge flashlight! This G.I. Joe is also extremely posable, and so the kids will have a great time playing with it. I especially liked it that Hasbro provided a brief history of the U.S. Coast Guard on the outside of the box! So now you not only get a great toy, but you also get to brief history lesson. FUN + LEARNING = G.I. Joe.

In general, for the price and value it is a GREAT deal comparing with other name brands like LEGO or DUPLO. The possibility for them to create something is endless (eventhough I was hoping they put more blocks inside). Amazon shipped it very fast too. I would recommend it to any family who has 18 - 48 months kids.

Learning Play Tools for Handy Kids Review

While searching for the perfect tool box for my 5 year old son, I noticed the one sold at ToysRus for 4.99 had many complaints about the clasp of the case breaking off the same day the child got it. I knew I had to spend more but didn't want to spend that much more and this tool box seems to do the trick. You get 6 accessories with the tool box. Although I have yet to open the case because it is a Christmas gift, it seems durable from the outside. I shall return if i should have any problems just so you are aware of them. I did think it was bigger but it is still a nice size.

Quercetti Georello Kaleido Gears, 55 pieces Review

Quercetti Georello Kaleido Gears, 55 pieces
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son received this toy for Christmas, and we gave one to our niece. The verdict is that it is almost, but not quite, perfect.
The toy is a set of interlocking squares of various colors that are perforated to hold a four-pronged hub that can support one of four sizes of gears. Everything is made of a durable plastic that has some flex to it. You can create systems of gears that spin around and even construct things like gearboxes. (The cover of the box--shown above--will give you a simple idea of what can be done.) There is a manual aimed at parents that helps them teach their child how gears work, too--a nice touch.
The quality of the toy is high: the colorful stickers for the gears are plastic coated, the injection-molded pieces are free from excess plastic, and the pieces fit together solidly. It's everything you would want from a European-made toy. (Quercetti, the manufacturer, is based in Italy and the toy is actually made there.)
It's a mesmerizing little toy and its variability is virtually endless. There are other kits in the Gear line that include such things as universal joints and 3-D parts, so it is highly expandable, even as your child ages.
My quibble? Our three year old niece adores the toy, but our three year old son only plays with it in fits. Truth be told, I play with it more than my son does. So as with anything, your mileage may vary.
It's nice that toys like this one are still being made. There's a lot of learning that can occur with it, too. Factor in the expandability and how can you go wrong?
Now if only I could get my son to join me more while I'm playing with it!

I was looking for a fun Lego set to pass the time and also be great to display. When looking at all the Lego sets in the Amazon Lego Store, Harry Potter The Burrows (4840) Lego Set catch my eye right away but the $60 price tag was also something that really needed to be thought about. After seeing the price of this set I looked at LEGO Harry Potter Hagrid's Hut (4738) which was only $40. I finally decided to get Harry Potter The Burrows set and I am really happy about the beautiful design and details throughout the whole set, to the Grandfather clock in the house to the red shingles. The house though, was smaller than I expected which isn't the biggest deal for me because the beauty and details to the Harry Potter world make it up to me. All in all the set is beautiful and was what I really wanted.

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwart's Express (4841) Review

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwart's Express (4841)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are comparing the various Lego trains out there, you may have noticed that I am the same nut-job parent reviewing some of the other trains. So yes, I am partial to Lego trains. But I'll still try to give you a good review.
It is really hard for me to give a Lego train four stars instead of five, but please hear me out before you ding me. If you have a Harry Potter fan in the house, then this train is wonderful. It has a great set of characters and the train is sufficiently styled like the actual GWR 4900 Class 5972 Olton Hall that you can imagine it steaming towards Hogwarts with Harry, Ron and Draco aboard. Where it falls short is in the use of standard train wheels for the engine, something that Lego did not have to do because they began producing large steam-engine style drivers in 2009 (see sets #10194 and #7597). Yes, this train is easier to build, it does not require as much tinkering, and it should be easier to motorize. But Lego lost an opportunity to make a really fantastic engine. As it is, the wheel trucks simply look odd. I have other qualms with the design, but the wheel issue is why I find myself giving it four stars instead of five. My apologies to die-hard fans of the design.
As for the kids, they don't seem to care about the wheels.
Now for the nuts and bolts. This set includes a locomotive, tender and austere coach. It does not include track or a motor. This is the fourth Hogwart's Express from Lego (earlier sets being 4708, 4758, 10132); I think this new one does a better job of using sloped bricks. The set includes Harry, Ron, Ginny, Luna and Draco, two owls, a cat, a trunk, sweets trolly and a very nicely rendered enchanted Ford Anglia from "The Chamber of Secrets." The coach lacks doors but it has an easy-lift off top for positioning mini-figures. The top of the tender is hinged allowing it to be used as a secret compartment. The train is fairly easy to build, though five and six year olds may require some assistance.
Parents, be sure to buy track. As of early 2011, Lego discontinued their standard track pack, #7896. Two such sets gave you an oval. 7896 is still available but often at outrageous prices. In place of 7896, Lego currently offers a flex-track pack (#8867, which is enough to make a circle) and a combination straight and flex pack (#7499). I don't believe the flex track is ideal for curves, but it is not clear what Lego's plan is at the moment. There are also switches available (set #7895). In a pinch, you can use the train without track; Lego's directions allow you to lock the swiveling bogies in place. But track makes a big difference in the play experience.
You do not have to motorize it right off the bat (my kids enjoy push trains as well as motorized ones). But if you do, the set should be fairly straightforward to motorize with Power Function components, probably with a motor under the firebox, a battery in the tender, and an infrared receiver somewhere in between. Power Function (PF) components are available directly from Lego. You will want to purchase: 88002 (motor), 8884 (IR receiver), 8879 (IR transmitter), and one of the following:
-8878 (rechargeable battery) with 8887 (transformer for recharging)
-88000 (AAA battery box).
Lego trains prior to 2007 used an electrified 9 volt track. This system has been discontinued. If you are just starting out with Lego trains, you are best going with the current system (Power Functions) since 9 volt parts and track have become scarce.
If you are not sure about whether you want to invest in a Lego train and want more information, I recommend looking for Lego train videos on Youtube. It is often hard to find Lego trains in stores and even then, you don't get to see them running or handled.
Cheers

My 5 yr old loves this new character and loves the way his arms move to give the sword action... better than the old days when the GI Joes and Barbies arms and legs were only stiff. Indiana Jones is a great role model for the new generation of boys coming up now... yes, there are some scary parts but, we just don't watch them. I love the references to the Bible, the lessons in history, no cussing and sex scenes. A true great American hero and role model. This action figure a must have to be the partner to Indy!!

Preferring his motorcycle to his classical education, and his switchblade to a school uniform, Mutt Williams never much cared for prep school life. But when he makes an enemy of the sinister Irina Spalko, a Russian agent and sword-master, his years of fencing lessons pay off. Deep in the Peruvian jungle, they match swords and tactics with ruthless precision, neither one prepared to accept any outcome but victory. Figure features sword-slashing action. The sword fits in Mutt's hand for slashing action, his belt keeps the sword and sheath on Mutt's hip, plus the knife launches from Mutt's hand. Figure measures 12".

Melissa & Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit Blocks Review

Melissa and Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit Blocks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is one reviewer here who didn't like these blocks. (I'm guessing that reviewer has other, more expensive, unit blocks.) Please allow me to address the points raised by that reviewer.
"The Weight": Some children can lift 15 pounds (like my 3-year-old), and some can't. Know your child, and supervise the little ones when moving the full box of blocks. Common sense, really. Not a problem. Usually, my kids leave the box on the floor and just push it across the carpet.
We have had one box split near the bottom at one end. A little wood glue and an overnight clamping session, and it was good to go. The dovetail joints are plenty strong for the job, even if there might be weak points in the wood. For the first while, my kids' favorite piece was the box (it was a boat, a bed, a car, etc.), so I'm not surprised that it had a problem.
"The Smell": yes, these blocks to have a slight odor to them when the package is first opened. It's the finish they use, and it's not strong at all. I would guess it's some type of natural oil. (Tung, linseed, or something similar.) I'm highly sensitive to chemicals and other odors (headaches and allergic reactions), and this didn't bother me at all. It dissipated quickly, and is completely unnoticeable after a short while. I especially like the finish M&D use on these blocks because it's not readily apparent, and yet it has kept the wood smooth. Even blocks that sneaked (under their own power, I'm sure ;o) into the bathtub have dried very well. The grain of the wood raised slightly, but smoothed back down nicely with play, and never splintered at all. The feel of these blocks is great, too. Smooth and pleasant to touch, but with enough texture to make them easy to manipulate for small hands.
"Not True Standard Unit Blocks": Um, yes, they are. The larger triangles are the size of two of the smaller triangles, two of which equal half of the standard unit block (1-1/2" x 2" x 5"). The hypotenuse of the large triangle is also the same length as the standard unit block (5"). The large triangles use variations of the same "unit" all the other blocks do. Just because HABA or other companies don't have a block that size doesn't mean it can't be done. Each and every block in this set shares the same width, as well as one other dimension (whether that second dimension is exactly the same as the first, or is a multiple of it).
And those little quarter circles are some of my kids' favorites. They're also great for helping to teach fractions, as are the half circles. Put 'em on their rounded edges on top of a little block, and you've got a nifty sailboat, to boot. Or on top of a pillar, and you've got a minaret spire. They're great.
"Not hardwood": Rubberwood is a hardwood. Not all hardwoods are as heavy as cherry or oak. Can you imagine how heavy this box would be if the blocks were made from a heavier hardwood? Ay! No thanks. It's heavy enough as it is.
I love it that the Rubberwood is tough as well as light. Along with the very tight, straight grain and smooth feel, my kids have abused these blocks for nearly four years now, and they're still looking great. (We now own two sets.)
To sum up: We love love love these blocks. If you have more than one child (or one very imaginative and creative child), you would do well to purchase two sets. (And you're still paying less for two sets than you would be buying 60 unit blocks from other companies.)
Cheap? No way.
An excellent value? Definitely!

LEGO DUPLO Toy Story The Great Train Chase 5659 Review

LEGO DUPLO Toy Story The Great Train Chase 5659
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great supplementary DUPLO set if you already own one (or in my case.. two) basic set. Now, What do I mean by that?
Specialized set like this can be fun but sometimes limited. This set for example only has 39 pieces. It is natural to wonder whether you should get some other basic set that have more pieces. For example, LEGO® DUPLO® Building Set - 71 Pieces (5380) or LEGO® DUPLO® Deluxe Brick Box - 102 Pieces (5507) that contain more pieces for your kids to play with.
I say get both. The pieces contained in this set integrate well with a basic set. You will get three small characters (Woody, Buzz and Jessie --> Basic set will have only one or two), two cars (basic set only have one --> my sons love chaining them up now), some other interesting pieces (i.e. cactus, coach) and additional basic blocks. A basic set can feel a little bland sometimes and these additional pieces from the set somehow add some additional 'magic' to it.
So if it is on its own, I say it is probably four star (slightly expensive for small number of pieces). But if you already have other DUPLO basic set, it is definitely a five star. I bought these for my two boys (3 years old and 1 1/2 years old) and they certainly enjoyed playing with them.

Mega Bloks Micro Bloks Tub (1000) Review

Mega Bloks Micro Bloks Tub (1000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
.
It's virtually impossible to review this product without referencing "you know who", the big Danish toy company whose patented building blocks or "bricks" dominate the market. The maker and my supplier of this product is the loyal oppposition, Megabrands, a Montreal-based company that has numerous toys and play items on the market, including their Mega Bloks Mini (the same scale as Duplo), and this product, Mega Blocks Micro (always specify "Micro").
And these bricks do interchange wonderfully for regular-sized Lego's -- the red is a little deeper but the construction looks identical except that this brand doesn't have the name of product tattoo'ed on each "hub." Who cares? It seems to me that there is a slightly more abundant proportion of the larger play building bricks -- that is, the same scale, but relatively more two-by-four hubs (a mainstay of Boomer-era Lego sets) or fewer "one by ones" and such that I've checked compared to similar-sized competitor sets. I checked, and this Mega Bloks 1000 piece ensemble includes 120 of the coveted two-by-four building bricks: that's 20 each of blue, yellow, white, red, black and green.
But the main point is, more for the money. Even after paying the not-inconsiderable shipping fee*, I got a thousand blocks in a tub and they averaged about $0.03-1/3 per brick. The tub is amply sized, with easily two-thirds of the available interior room left for adding whatever. They're cheaper, too: starter sets from Big Danish Toy Co. I have researched (I also bought one) seem generally run to about five to seven cents per brick, and ordering pieces "a la carte" thru the manufacturer's USA online sales division will almost certainly exceed that. This matters because costs mount up quickly: ask anyone with experience with this genre of building blocks and they'll probably tell you that the need for more building bricks usually blooms with the child's (or adult's) blooming creativity; and cubic volume being what it is, the number of new bricks needed can shoot up exponentially.
*In all fairness I should say that this product was fulfilled from an East Coast source and took no longer to get to me than any other ground UPS from the Northeast to Chicago.
By comparison, a smaller, 405-piece tub I just now reviewed from [big Toy Co.] will let you make one of three separate houses at a time, but the possibilities of creative play are left open. This thousand-piece product gives a bigger, slightly sturdier-feeling tub and almost two and-a-half times the blocks. There are enough pieces in this set to do several rudimentary structures at a time, or some pretend vehicles.
To go with the Mega Bloks Micro line, unless you switch-hit you'll forego the competitor's profusion of movie tie-ins, infrastructure projects like jet airports and jet airplanes, and idealized Danish suburbs and farms (Danish roofs really are hipped that steeply). This product is not without tie-ins, including one sci-fi compatible line that seem very space opera, not unlike 'Star Wars' but not 'Star Wars'. But mostly it's for people who want to, or want their children to, just dig in and build creatively. I did notice one tendency for Mega Bloks Micro bricks to stick together perhaps a little too well at times. But I don't want to blow this out of proportion as I am a notorious klutz with small objects, perhaps even more than as a child. Hence the overall five rating, and I don't know why the star-counts below didn't tot up properly. Four for fun, five for the other attributes, I'd say.
As a starter -- why not? As an "adder," especially for open-ended building -- I recommend this thousand-piece box of Mega Bloks Micro highly. I should also say that Mega Brands the manufacturer makes several other lines of bricks that are all compatible one to another the way Lego+Duplo can be married = the same-sized equivalent of Duplos being the Mega Bloks "Mini" line. You'll find sets of them in abundance at this site, too.
.
A note: Mega Blok products are manufactured in Canada. Any LEGO product I've seen (and I've seen a few) indicate provenence either in one of several European countries, or in Mexico. Neither contains Chinese components that I can tell. - a.s.

My 7 year old and I built this together. He loved the hidden traps and swinging gates. It seems to have more moving parts than I am used to in lego sets (I always thought of bionicles as having the contraptions rather than lego sets) but in spite of having so many moving parts it seems durable. Plus the Atlantis series characters are really fun.

This set contains 2 new pieces: The head and the mask. The mask is long and shaped like a claw. The head is smaller than the heads on the older sets. The attachment point for the mask is at the top of the head instead of at the mouth. So it will look odd if you decide to put on older masks. Overall the set is great. I recommend this set to anyone.
