Alex Toys Art Book to Go Review

I purchased this toy so that my granddaughter would have a case to keep her art work in. Although the case is smaller than I expected, it is pretty and durable. I added some sticker packs, and she is ready to travel with her art supplies. This is a great choice for a toddler.

Melissa & Doug Decorate-Your-Own Train Review

Melissa and Doug Decorate-Your-Own Train

My 3 year old boy is totally train-obsessed. He also loves to do art projects of just about any variety--painting, play-doh, coloring, cutting, gluing, drawing, assembling--you name it. My wife and I are also big fans of Melissa and Doug products. There was no question that this was a must-buy. Overall, this was a good buy for the money.
Like most M&D products, the quality of the wood is excellent. Everything was solid and cut, fitted and sanded properly. When I opened the paint (which was actually quite difficult to do), I found it to be mostly dried out. Maybe that's why it was hard to open. No worries, I just added a few drops of water and mixed well (but it did take some extra unanticipated time). There weren't really any step-by-step instructions, but they're really not necessary. The kids just want to paint, put the stickers on, glue, assemble, and play (he couldn't wait to assemble the wheels). We painted the train in sections by color, letting each color dry before starting the next. After we painted, we applied the stickers. The stickers seemed to be just a hair to big for the surfaces, as the edges of the stickers would stick over the edges of the wood. I would recommend having a grown-up trim the stickers with a fine blade after application. Otherwise, the stickers may come loose around the edges.
Another recommendation: cut the train tracks off of the sides of the box, and tape them together end-to-end with clear packing tape. It's not a very long track, but my son doesn't care. He loves the movie, "The Polar Express," especially the part where the train goes over the frozen lake. So I also took the extra piece of blue cardboard from the inside of the packaging, and taped it to the end of the track so his train can go from the tracks to the "ice."
In the end, this was a good buy, so don't hesitate. The bottom line is, my kid loves it, and if yours is as train-obsessed, he/she will, too. It was fun to do the project (for both of us), and he loves to play with the train, which (aside from the stickers) is pretty durable.

Paint & Pretend Mini Tea Set Review

Paint and Pretend Mini Tea Set

My daughter and I just finished our tea set a few days ago, and I felt this is a product that truly deserves a good review. I should start by saying that my daughter is MUCH younger than the recommended age and still was able to really enjoy this project.
Using the example on the cover of the box as a guideline for our tea set, we set out, with my daughter painting all the solid color on the plates and cups (I just smoothed it out a little). My first thought was that we were probably going to run out of paint, but as it ended up there really was enough paint included. Some of the colors were a bit too thick, but adding just a drop or two of water solved this problem. Warning: Don't do what I did and add too much water. Our orange became runny.
This isn't a project you are probably going to finish in one sitting. We did ours over a three day period. The paint dries pretty quickly, and I'm sure it's possible to do at one sitting, but probably not with young children who have a hard time keeping their hands off of not dry enough paint. Besides, stretching it out made it even more fun for us.
When it came time to make the paint permanent by baking it in the oven, I realized we had lost our instructions. We e-mailed and left a voice mail at Creativity For Kids. Not only did they e-mail back right away with the instructions, but they also called a couple of days later. WOW!
Our tea set turned out very cute and my daughter is really having a good time serving tea and food to me and her stuffed animals and dolls. This is definitely something that we will keep and treasure.

Toysmith 4M Fairyland Dollies #3467 Review

This is a very cute 'doll house' for creative kids and families. You do have to make the dolls, which is a family exercise. The 'house' IS cardboard - as mentioned very blatantly in the description - but it is ALOT CUTER than you can see/read from the description. I bought this is as a gift fro a 4 year old. Its recommended for 8+ - because of the making of the dolls. But with some help it can be done. I wanted a fairy/doll house- but you cannot find one for a reasonable price. I think this was the best compromise... being the price is low, the trade off is its not gonna last generations... but I was OK with that.
