Skip-Bo Breakers Tile Game Review

Skip-Bo Breakers Tile Game
Average Reviews:

This game was purchased for half price. We loved the original SkipBo but this is quite different. The rules were not extremely clear to my family but after rereading them several times and playing the game three or four times, we discovered what round meant and how it was played. Now out of the five of us who played the game, three of us are enthusiasts. This may take time to grow on one if enamored with the old card version.

First to zero wins!A sequence of fun! Massive amount of fun!
: The object of the Skip-Bo Breakers Tile game is to get rid of all your tiles. The only way to do this is by creating sequences. A sequence can be anything from a single number to a pair or a straight. Play continues by matching the sequence, beating it or breaking it. Breaker Tiles with three- or four-of-a-kind help break the current sequence and give a player the lead in forming sequences. Ages 7 and over.

To excel at this game you really need to work as a team with your real (or imaginary) partner. I love the "gotcha" element when a well played card changes everything. The basic rules of the game are similar to spades or hearts or bridge, but the spell and potion cards add a new twist. I've played this game with adults and with kids as young as six and they all love it. For any fan of the Wizardology book or the Harry Potter series, this is a must have.

Betrayal at House on the Hill Board Game Review

Betrayal at House on the Hill Board Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fantastic game that, as advertised, doesn't play the same way twice. Each game starts the same--you play the part of an explorer in a spooky old house. Each unexplored door reveals a new room (a tile that you turn over from the stack), many of which have items or events to discover. The twist comes once enough "Omens" (special items) have been collected--at that point one of the game's 50 scenarios comes into play, determined by which Omen was the last uncovered, what characters are playing, etc. One of the players now becomes the Traitor, and reads from a special book, while the rest, now called Heroes, read from their own book. The Traitor tries to bring some event to pass, while the Heroes try to stop him or her. It's fun being Traitor or Hero, and the way the game is set up it's usually someone different every time, adding even more replay value.
The game's complexity and violent content make it unsuitable for little kids, but it's a blast for adults! There are a few rule inconsistencies, which keep this game from getting 5 stars--however, there's now an errata you can download from the publisher's site that helps fix most of these errors. The pros definitely outweigh the cons on this one--pick it up and give it a try!

Catan Geographies, Germany Review

Catan Geographies, Germany

First may I say Klaus Tauber is brilliant!! I have and love all of his "Settler" games.
We have played the games for years and even made a point of visiting the largest department store in Berlin Germany last spring where an entire area of the store displays his games.
I was very excited when the Geographies series came out. I really hope this is only the beginning of many more to come. Would love to see Italy, France, Spain, etc in a board game. The landmarks and layout of the game is pretty spot on. I will say I was very surprised to see Hof on the game board as I had lived there years ago and Hof is not one of your MAIN Germany towns. So glad it was included. We play often with our kids, but also bought one for them. The game says for 3 or 4 players. We have played it with two and enjoyed just as much. We just shorten the winning points. Love, love, love the game. Recommend it for all ages.

We have a lot of fun playing it. It requires mental alertness and close attention to the board and what is going on. If you sleep at the game, forget it. When you are alert, you are rewarded. Of course, there is always a portion of luck involved - the draw of the dominoes, the play of the other players, etc.

Cites and Knights Settlers of Catan Expansion Review

Cites and Knights Settlers of Catan Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This expansion brings the world of Catan to it's pinnacle!!! The rules seem very overwhelming when you read them, but once you actually put them into play they make so much sense. My wife and I loved the original game, but since we started playing Cities & Knights we cannot stand to play without it. It is really easy to collect the required victory points with the expansion and though the Cities & Knights rules increase the required VP's to 13, we find that in a two player game 15 allows for a little more action each game. I highly suggest this game to anyone who has a strategic mindset or wants to have more control over the island of Catan. As mentioned in multiple other reviews, be sure that you purchase the correct edition in reference to your edition of Settlers.

Dark clouds gather over the once peaceful landscape. Wild barbarians, lured by Catan's wealth and power, maneuver to attack. Their massive warships loom against the orange horizon. You must be strong! Barbarians attack the weakest targets, and the victim of their onslaught will be the player who contributes the least to the defense of Catan. Don't take any chances! Field your knights! In The Cities & Knights of Catan, you engage in the defense of Catan and compete to build the three great metropolises of Catan. Each of these magnificent centers are even more valuable than cities and are safe from the barbarians. You must invest in city improvements, which you acquire using commodities of trade: Coin, Paper, and Cloth. If you improve your culture, muster your knights, and enrich your cities, you will be the master of the great realm of Catan! Made in the USA.

Tamagotchi Connection V4 - Digital Yellow

I know, I know, it seems kind of dorky that a college student of nearly twenty years ordered a Tamagotchi for herself. Man, though, do I love this thing! It's really so much fun to play with! I have been wanting one for years, and I really think college was the perfect time to do so. I grew up with pets, so being away from the responsibility and joy of animals has been hard for me. My Tamagotchi is a wonderful pet companion! ...of sorts... I have the responsibility of feeding it and cleaning up after it and giving it medicine, but I can also play games with it and use it to interact and play games with others! It's really quite a neat little gadget. I know when I was younger, I would have held onto this thing all day if I had one. I highly recommend this enjoyable, wonderful toy for anyone who loves company! :)

Harry's Grand Slam Baseball Game Review

Harry's Grand Slam Baseball Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I admit that I passed over this game a few times initially without a care, but having played it now, I couldn't have been more wrong. This is a great baseball game that is played with cards, not spinners, dice or pinballs. Most baseball games utilize either a dice or spinner system to determine a play, but this game is a little different in that you play your hand of cards against your opponents hand to determine a play. So for example, if it's my turn at bat and the 3 cards that I hold in my hand are (strikeout, single, and a triple) and my opponent, who is pitching, has (strikeout, error, ground out), I want to try to play my offense cards (ie, the single and triple) to score before my opponent, or even myself, play the 3 outs to retire the side. It's not realistic in the sense that you already know part of the outcome based on the cards in your hand, but it does give you a little bit of managerial play calling. For example, can I put an extra runner on base prior to playing a home run card or will the pitcher retire the side before I get that far? Then on the flipside, when you take to the mound, you're always trying to come up with those 3 outs without any damage done.
The game has a lot of plays that you might not normally find in a casual baseball game, such as a balk, hit batter, passed ball. It also has a pinch hitter/relief pitcher feature where you take a card from the draw deck and place it face down until you decide to use it. And since it can go either way, whether you're hitting or pitching, it could be, say, a strikeout or a home run.
My only gripe, and it's somewhat minor is the fact that a runner cannot go from first to third or score from second on a triple. But a variation on gameplay could easily be introduced with a dice roll to determine those situations (ie, 1-3 is a success, 4-6 is a failed attempt) if desired.
The game isn't terribly complex nor is it meant to be like Strat-o-matic or APBA Baseball, but the simple back-and-forth play of cards doesn't fail to create a great sense of tension, relief, and excitement. There's a lot of whooping, laughing and groaning that happens, which is great for a game that is meant to be played in 20 minutes.
The game is faithfully recreated based on the original game. It's basically a small box of cards and the original instructions. But even cooler is the fact that OOTB Games created a retro-like tin to house the original game, as well as include a scoreboard dial system that actually improves on the original scorekeeping. So you can play the game like the original or more conveniently with the scoreboard. A very thoughtful reproduction and improvement to the game. The picture of the tin looks like it's the size of one of those retro tin lunchboxes, but it's actually much smaller, which is a good thing as it doesn't take up much room.
This game is pretty much a 2-player game. Although the original instructions has a method for playing with more people, it's basically sharing and taking turns, which isn't all that great, IMO.
If you like baseball, particularly something that harks back to the Golden Era of the 50's & 60's, this is a keeper of a game for those casual and quick moments of gameplay. I plan on buying a couple more for friends as gifts.

Carcassonne Review

Carcassonne
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most people come to this game after they have already been introduced to the European Designer Games by Settlers of Catan. This is a different kind of game than Settlers but in some senses it shares a lot of commonalities.
The game is easy to learn for a wide audience, it is reasonably quick to play (30 - 40 minutes) and is a very "immersive" game i.e. there aren't long periods of boredom. There are elements of strategy and luck, which makes for a "fun" game experience.
This game is fun for children and adults. For children the "farmers" are a little too complex, but the game works very well without that element.
The game consists of laying tiles to build cities, roads and monasteries in the South of France. Points are gained by creating long roads, building large cities or farming multiple farms. It draws elements of building jigsaw puzzles together with a strategy game of competing for territory.
I have played this game with family members who aren't really into board games and they enjoyed it just as much as gamers.
There are many expansions to this game which add a few more dimensions as you get more advanced. There is a very high replay-ability.
I would high recommend this game to people who are bored with standard Monopoly or Cranium type board games that are popular in the US.
If you loved Settler's of Catan this a "must"!

Great fun for those who like dice, skill and chance. The box makes it handy to carry around - a good "front porch game" as they advertise. The box was not sturdy enough though, as it started to separate at the seams. It is holding together so far, though.

Entertain yourself with this classic style dice game called Shut the Box. This game is centuries old that has been played and loved by sailors and fishermen, and now you can enjoy it too in your very own home. Simply roll the dice and flip over any combinations of tiles that match the numbers you rolled. Then, continue rolling until the numbers you roll no longer match the tiles - this is the end of your turn. If the tiles add up to six or less, only roll one die. You can figure out your score by reading left to right - the lowest score wins the game. This game is fun to play with a group of friends but can also be enjoyed with only two people. Everything you need is included in the classic style mahogany finish box and has an attractive look even while being stored in a business office or study, and even your elegant home living room. 8" L x 6" W x 3" H

Carcassonne - Hunters and Gatherers Review

Carcassonne - Hunters and Gatherers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers is a brand new product in the Carcassonne line of games. The original game uses medieval tiles (castles, roads, monasteries, etc.), whereas this one takes place in prehistoric times (forests, lakes, meadows). In order to score, you need to actually close off the rivers and forests, unlike the original Carcassonne where you can keep on building and building onto a city in order to get more points. Also, if you complete a forest with a gold nugget, you get a bonus tile - basically an extra turn, but the bonus tiles sometimes have a huge bonus.
The original is fun, but if you're just getting into the game you definitely want to try this first. Scoring is different, as well as the addition of a new type of "meeple," but it plays a lot faster and just makes a little more sense. The original is good, but Hunters & Gatherers is *terrific*!

Game Description: This is a new game (not an expansion) in the Carcassonne line. It has new graphics, a new set of components, a theme set in the stone age, and new rules to match the theme. As in Carcassonne, players place tiles and put game figures on them, but with different strategies and results. Players have figures that can represent hunters, gatherers, or fishermen and place them in meadows, forests, or on rivers. They also have huts, which can be placed on rivers or lakes and are scored at the end of the game as are the hunters. Gatherers and fishermen are scored when forests or rivers are completed. There are special forest tiles that give the player who plays a tile completing a forest an extra tile lay of special tiles with special features. Players will like this game that features the tile-laying and token placements of Carcassonne with many new twists.

Travel Guess Who Game Review

Travel Guess Who Game
Average Reviews:

We purchased this for use on our family vacation with our 3 children. They love the full-sized game that we have at home. The travel game is easily small enough to fit in a carry-on bag. It seems sturdy so far, although we have bent a few of the cards. The names on the cards are a bit small, and you have to occasionally look closely at the cards to make out some of the finer details (mustache, eyeglasses, etc.). Overall, a great learning game and perfect for travel. I almost think that this travel version is more sturdy than the original version because the cards don't fall out of the holders as easily as in our full-sized version. We were also able to play this game on a turbulent airplane without anything falling over, spilling on the floor, or getting lost. Highly recommend, especially if your kids like this game.
