On the one side, Olivia's house comes with furniture and appliances, plates of food and minor accessories like a book, a lamp, etc. It is cute and fun and my daughter absolutely loves playing with and arranging the furniture "just so" and moving Olivia around.
On the other side, though, is where the adventure begins. The pirate ship is the highlight (as far as my daughter is concerned) of the toy. She can sail the Seven Seas with Olivia (complete with pirate hat and eye patch), a treasure chest, treasure map and parrot. My daughter has so much fun switching from house to pirate ship, and back again. This is such a fun toy both for my daughter and for myself....it's fun to get caught up in playing with my daughter when we've got this playset out.
Now for the cons: I do agree with one of the other reviewers above in that it is kind of disappointing that this playset only comes with Olivia. We went and bought Olivia's family to go with this playset, but it would have been nice if we didn't have to do that. Also, on the pirate side, the palm tree is made of cardboard. Putting the palm tree in its little slot (to stand it up) and then removing it again over and over.....well, this palm tree lasted a week before my daughter ended up ripping the leaves from the trunk. It would have been nice if the palm tree had been made of plastic (like every other accessory in this playset.) It would have been more durable and certainly would have looked better. If I had thought of it, I would have had the palm tree laminated before I gave it to my daughter.
Overall, this is an excellent toy for fostering imaginative play and has provided both my daughter and me with hours of playtime and has given me some special memories of playing with my daughter that I will cherish. I don't necessarily consider this an "educational" toy per say, but the "fun factor" of this playset is absolutely out of this world. Even after she outgrows this toy, I will probably hang on to it for sentimental reasons. :-)

(More customer reviews)I bought these to put on my fridge for my one year old grandaughter. She likes to play with the magnets and every time she brings me one I say what the letter or number is. I figure it can't hurt. The only drawback is that some of the letters and numbers are a bit hard to distinguish.

Best Friends Club Ink Laptop Review

(More customer reviews)Purchased this for our newly five year old daughter who asked for a "real" laptop for Christmas. While I think she will enjoy this toy within the next year and for a couple of years to come, she is not ready to select the games and play them on her own. It would be more age appropriate for an elementary aged child. The only real con is the screen. It is so small and the contrast is poor, so it is hard to see.

Vtech Preschool Learning Alphabet Apple Review

(More customer reviews)My grandson is 5 and has autism. Teaching children with developmental delays is challenging, to say the least. One must get their attention, then keep it, then make the best use of it. This "laptop" does all this and more. My grandson has owned and loved his Alphabet Apple for a couple of years and he is the only child in his class who can tell you the sound of all the letters in the alphabet. So if you ask him, "what does man (house, canary, apple, anything-at-all) start with?" he can tell you in about one-fourth of a second - even words he's never heard before, so this is not memorization! His teacher is always calling him "smart boy" - music to my ears! To be fair, he has a lot of laptops that gloss over the letter sounds, but this is the one that he plays with the most. He doesn't use all the features, or even use some of them properly, but it is teaching him something and doing a good job of it. I'm sure a neurotypical child would get even more out of it. We don't let this one get lost in the closet because he is always asking for his Alphabet Apple. Worth it at twice the price.

Melissa & Doug Jumbo ABC Chunky Puzzle Review

We noticed that the manufacture says it's hand painted, but acctually the letters are printed material glued on the wooden pieces, not painted on. The one we received had peeling edges that revealed this. Second, it is not real wood. The daddy probably knows the right term but to me, the mommy, its 'presure treated wood byproduct'. You don't see the beautiful rings of real wood on it. In addition, you need to wipe it clean before giving to your kids because of the fine samll dusts. I am not suprised about the quality being under $20, but at least the manufacture should not state 'hand painted' when it is not. These details may not bother you if you are ok with other Melissa and Doug products. However, I am concerned about the printed material and whatever they used to glue it on because my baby will chew on it and the chemical will end up in his tiny body. I am still in search for a puzzle painted with non-toxic paint.

(More customer reviews)Wow! I am so glad I bought this. After reading reviews on all of the other "laptops" for children, I decided on this one after thorough research. Most complaints with other parents on the other laptops was about the LCD screen being so small, while the screen on this is perfect for its size and intent. I did not have trouble seeing anything. So it doesn't light up, I'm thankful, that's one less battery to replace. The other complaint I read about the others is that they were loud. This one is not. My children playing with their toys doesn't disturb me though. If they are learning & interacting with the toy, I'm happy.
Another fun feature on this paticular "laptop" is that it has a working mouse. You can click to enter & move it slightly left or right or up & down (it is attached to the pad) to get to another activity or participate in one of the thirty plus fun games that offer pre-K learning & Kindergarten learing...find the shape that is bigger, etc... And yes I played with it to make sure everything worked correctly & to see what & how it would be teaching my children. It does teach & it has been fun for mine. It is a sturdy laptop with more bang for the buck than the rest of the other "laptops with many complaints" out there. You will be glad you purchased this for your little one. I have NO COMPLAINTS with this product. I also get involved with my children as much as I can to show them how learning can be fun. This purchase has been a smart one! Thank you Amazon!!! (More customer reviews)We bought this for our daughter about a year ago, and everyone in the house plays with it, her older and younger brothers both, and that means ages 2-5. It's held up beautifully, nothing wrong with it and it's been dragged all over the house (and car), fought over, and wrestled with and it's still going just fine.
As a plus, the mouse pad can either sit on a peg connected to the right side for easy travel stability, but for our left handed daughter, you just move it off the peg and move it on over. This is a huge plus for this system.
