Marvel Legends ICONS Series 12 Inch Action Figure - The BEAST with Bonus of Exclusive "Evolution of an Icon" Book Review

Marvel Legends ICONS Series 12 Inch Action Figure - The BEAST with Bonus of Exclusive Evolution of an Icon Book

Dr. Henry "Hank" McCoy, otherwise known as the Beast of the X-Men, and resident super genius of the team makes the leap to the 12" Icons line and it works well. His sculpt is detailed and he's very massive.
This is the variant "lab coat" version and his coat actually looks really good considering that Marvel Legends don't normally do the whole clothing thing. His color is also the perfect shade of blue. For some reason the alternate, non-variant version is grey (EDIT - apparantly Beast was originally grey but much like the Hulk ended up changing to a more vibrant color). That and the addition of the coat and glasses make the variant better overall to me.
He is easy to stand since he has huge feet. While he does sport the usual tons of articulation this line is know for it's not all useful all the time. I did end up with one wonky shoulder joint too but at least it is hidden under the coat.
I was unable to remove the coat of mine but I have seen pictures of these with the coat off so I guess it is possible. I just didn't want to tear mine trying and it really does look good on him. Kind of like he's pissed because some bad guy, let's just say Mr. Sinister, interrupted a science experiment. He also wears glasses that look good but are glued into place so not normally removable.
He is a solid value at $15 - $17 which is his local retail.

Marvel Universe Masterworks Galactus with Silver Surfer Review

Marvel Universe Masterworks Galactus with Silver Surfer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Galactus (G), Devourer or Worlds, Wielder of the Power Cosmic! This is the guy you don't want to see showing up on your planet as he'll eat it - well suck the life force out of it anyway. Considered a natural force of the Marvel Universe he's immensely powerful and mysterious. This is the huge Marvel Masterworks version that comes with a small Silver Surfer (SS). Note: This is *NOT* the SDCC exclusive that comes on a giant blister card (and commands a high price) although it is the same figure.
Box - I don't usually review packaging but as it's nice and seems an integral element of this particular figure... It's about a two foot long rectangle and has a die cut cover with nice graphics of big G and SS. Flip it open to reveal more great graphics on the back side of the flap and you can see the entire toy, which is nice, and there's a "try me" hole to push the button for lights and sounds. There are nice graphics all around with a diorama on the back of G among 20 or so other Marvel figures. You can get him out without any damage to the box or tray if you are so inclined.
At first he seems a bit chunky but then you realize it's because he's so big! It's worth noting that he feels completely solid as if he's not hollow (except for the electronics areas) like some other figures in this size. He's got some heft! He's widely advertised as the 19" Galactus. However from his feet to the tip of the middle of his helmet I measured 18 ¾" but to the tip of his "tuning forks" I got 20" so maybe they averaged it out. Either way he's huge and gives my old Marvel Legends Galactus build a figure an inferiority complex.
There are tons of details from the lines and jewels of his helmet and determined expression to the lines of his suit down to the bottoms of his feet. The harness portion of his outfit around his chest is actually a softer rubbery piece, everything else is solid plastic. The back of his head is entirely of the clear blue which is the only odd piece but easily ignored.
His paint work is also very nice. Purple, light and dark blue, some black and skin tone on his face are all evident and all seems clean.
G is well articulated with a great ball joint neck with plenty of turn and tilt action, ball and pin shoulders with a cut at the bicep, double pin elbows and ball wrists also with great turn and tilt. The back of his gauntlet are also cut to allow the hand to turn there as well. There is no chest or ab crunch but that is likely due to the electronics. He has a cut waist that turns well and he seems to have ball type hips. Of course the hips are restricted due to his skirt (don't make fun of him though) but you can still move them in and out some and forward and back... He won't be doing jumping jacks though. He's got double pin knees, cuts right above his boots and his feet can rock forward and back. Depending on how you count it that's about 24 points and all are tight yet movable. He poses well.
I was pleasantly surprised that he does not just say 3 or 4 phrases but 11! While it's no Toy Story 12" Talking Buzz Lightyear that's pretty respectable. As some may wish it to be a surprise I'll not list them here but will in the comments. Push his chest button and he speaks and his eyes and helmet jewels light up yellow. The voice is a tiny bit silly and over the top - kind of like the world's biggest wrestler - but I can live with it as it's a neat extra.
And his accessory is a 3 ¾" scale Silver Surfer. You really couldn't ask for something better (although I'd love to get some pieces of the world eating machine) as SS is his most well know herald. The little guy looks fine but is a little under articulated making it hard to keep him on the surf board. Still it's a nice addition. He does also come with a little Fury File card with some story like text on it, a Fury File code and a Superhero Registration card telling some about his powers and stats. On a side note, I get that the SR card is maybe for kids and just an extra but it seems silly that this cosmic being would come down and register - including leaving his thumb print. ;-)
For the price (i.e. not the SDCC exclusive price) this guy is great. Huge, well sculpted and painted, poses well, has more phrases than expected and a little SS buddy. I can't even knock off for the wrestler voice on this one.

Galactus hungers! He eats entire worlds, consuming infinite quantities of matter to keep his massive form alive. As such, it might be a good idea to keep him in your collection so this 19-inch tall, articulated, and evil resident of the Marvel universe won't go out and eat distant galaxies. As an added bonus, this boxed figure includes a 3 3/4-inch Silver Surfer, his herald! Don't miss this one, it's one of the biggest things Hasbro has ever done for Marvel!

Batman & Robin Dc Toys R Us Exclusive Review

Batman and Robin Dc Toys R Us Exclusive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Batman & Robin two-pack mainly because of the Batman figure. I also needed a Robin figure so that was another good reason for buying this set. The Batman figure that comes with this two-pack is one of my favourite representations of Batman in toy form ever.
Batman is superbly sculpted by the Four Horsemen (who used to work on the McFarlane figures) - all his muscles are well-defined but not so much that he looks constipated. To me, this Batman looks a lot like McFarlane's drawings, especially the long ears and large cape. The only problem I have with the sculpt is that I wish they had made his hands as semi-closed fists like the Mattel Zipline Batman. As they are, his hands cannot grasp the batarang he comes with.
The dark grey paint wash on the figure is also nice and the figure looks much better and more realistic than the original Mattel Zipline Batman figure because of it. The other main reason I wanted this particular batman figure was because of the huge wraparound cloth cape that came with it.
Other Batman figures either come with a rubber cape or a small cloth cape. However, one of the coolest things about batman in the comics is the way he is drawn with a massive billowing cape. The cape that comes with this figure will not disappoint! With the dark paint wash and the large cape this Batman would fit in well with the Dark Knight Movie Masters figures. The Batman figure is well-articulated but my only problem with it is that it lacks a hip joint.
The Robin figure, although not sculpted by the Four Horsemen, is still a good one. It is supposed to be the Tim Drake Robin and he has some nicely sculpted hair that is supposed to look like it's been gelled. The Robin figure could have done with some better articulation, especially hip joints.
Both figures come packaged in a very iconic pose and if you just want to display the figures I would recommend not taking the figures out of the package. I thought the Batman figure was too cool to leave in the package so I took both figures out. This was particularly complicated as Batman's cape was attached at particular points to the plastic packaging.
I highly recommend this two-pack for all Batman fans if you want modern Batman and Robin figures that still capture their classic comic look.

Mattel DC Universe Classics Shazam Figure Review

Mattel DC Universe Classics Shazam Figure
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DC Universe Classics is the most posable Captain Marvel figure I have ever seen. I don't know how many points of articulation this figure has, but he can bend at the waist, point his toes, swivel his shoulders and nod his head. For that alone, it is a pretty awesome figure. Most action figures nowadays resemble plastic statues more than anything else.
The only real drawback is that it just doesn't look like Captain Marvel. The Big Red Cheese has been getting a lot of action figure releases lately, including his own set with the whole Marvel Family, so there are fewer excuses for a poor sculpting like this. Often times, whether I really dig a figure or not will depend on the face sculpt, and this one falls short.
For a children's toy, I think this would be a lot of fun. Because the figure is so posable, there are lots of play possibilities, and I think that is the point of the DC Universe Classics line. They are more designed for play than display.
So a little disappointing, but overall a good figure and a welcome addition to any Marvel Family collection.

MARVEL LEGENDS ICONS " IRON MAN " GOLD VARIANT Review

MARVEL LEGENDS ICONS IRON MAN GOLD VARIANT
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an avid collector of Marvel Legends Icons 12" figures. Although the Iron Man figure is pretty impressive, there are some qualities that are missing. First, the positives: very detailed. Possibly the most detailed Iron Man action figure you can find. One reason why I only collect this series of figures. The only thing that can possibly top it in detail would be the actualy replica head of Iron Man or a statue bust but still you would not own the whole Iron Man. Extremely poseable. These figures are nicer than the DC Direct figure or Movie Masters DC figures because the latter two look more like dolls with clothy material and have less articulation. The gold color really makes it similar to the Iron Man in the movies but not exactly accurate. The head is somewhat disappointing because the face mask looks hideous. The effort to make it removeable so you can see Stark's face ruins the look of the face plate. Stark is not a man in superhero physical shape, however they might have made this figure somewhat too lanky and tall so it has a slight problem standing up by itself as opposed to more balanced and bulked figures like Wolverine or the Hulk (my favorite). Finally, the figure comes with nice repulsor rays that you can attach to the palms of his hands. However, and this what I don't understand, you can't bend his hands 90 degrees back with palms facing you because of the poor design of his wrist that locks any movement going to other way. That is so pointless given this is a common movement for Iron Man so he can attack his enemies with his repulsor rays. I can easily do this movement with my Wolverine figure so not sure what the deal is with Iron Man.

Marvel Legends Series 8 Modern Iron Man Action Figure Review

Marvel Legends Series 8 Modern Iron Man Action Figure
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this figure when I ordered Iceman, and honestly my anticipation for recieving the figures was 95% from Iceman. However, once I opened the package and saw just how cool Iron Man was in person, I was elated. I am 100% satisfied with the appearance of this figure. I can't say enough good things about it. The base is nice, he stands well without it, the mask comes off, the suit is very cool.
The only small problem I had with Modern Iron Man was in his wrists. A small flap of plastic prevents his wrists from being able to properly pose his repulsors.
One small problem, however, doesn't prevent me from giving this figure a 5 out ouf 5.

Mattel DC Universe Big Barda Figure - Styles May Vary Review

Mattel DC Universe Big Barda Figure - Styles May Vary
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Big Barda is a New God from Apokolips and she could kick your butt. She's the wife of Scott Free and she's strong and invincible so he better stay in line. This is her from Wave 7 of the DC Universe Classics line.
Her figure seems just a touch smaller than maybe it should be, she is called BIG Barda after all. I suppose it is a fine line to walk with a character like this making her look tough yet feminine at the same time. Her sculpt, however, is quite detailed. The suit she wears is a kind of armor and has a textured scaled appearance that is intricate. It also has several sculpted bands around her arms and legs, a gold chest plate and gold skirt with red and black symbols and she sports a cape. It's all fancy in a Fourth World kind of way. Her face is actually attractive and realistic looking - many companies have difficulty making attractive female faces. She also wears her big black yellow and red helmet which has plenty of detail all of its own. Note that there is an alternate version without helmet with her hair out but I have not seen that one in person.
Her blue suit seems to have a bit of wash to better bring out those small details. She actually is pretty colorful with light and dark blues, gold, red, yellow and black and it is all pretty darn flawless. I found only one flaw on mine and it is so small that you'll think I'm weird for even noticing. One of her eyebrows is painted as raised which looks fine but on closer inspection there is a tiny raised surface on her face where the eyebrow should have been painted making it even with the other. Maybe the painter was using artistic license. I can't count off for this since it is miniscule and looks fine.
She's as well articulated as any of the male DCU figures sporting a ball neck and shoulders, pin elbows and rotating hands, the tilt and the turn waist joints, hip, knee and ankle joints. The only issue is that the helmet limits neck movement quite a bit and the skirt limits hip movement.
Her Mega-Rod weapon fits in either hand and looks fine in sculpt and paint although it is small and not very intimidating. Because it is small and does not fit tightly in her hand just be careful not to loose it. She comes with her piece of the Atom Smasher collect and connect figure. He's about nine inches tall and had great paint and details all his own so is worth it if you are interested in the entire line.
In the end she's a pretty impressive female figure.

Wonder Woman Series 1 - Wonder Woman Review

Wonder Woman Series 1 - Wonder Woman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From the new DC Direct series based upon Terry Dodson's stunning rendition of the legendary Amazon Princess, this depiction of Wonder Woman (as an action figure) is fantastic. I would rate it as almost dead even with the `Justice' Series 3 rendition of Wonder Woman in terms of being the best Wonder Woman figure produced in the last several years.
The criteria I am setting forth are as follows:
1. Does this Wonder Woman figure accurately resemble its promotional photos?
Absolutely! As most collectors know, promotional photos (particularly, ones made public months in advance of the figure's actual release) can be rather deceptive, as one terrific figure is promised but then, the released figure will pale in comparison to the photo. In this case, I would say the promotional photo and the Wonder Woman figure are at least 95% identical. In other words, the resemblance is dead on.
Also, I was impressed as to how even the figure's eyes matched the photo. For whatever reason, some DC Direct figures have barely visible (i.e. poorly painted) eyes, but you can clearly see this figure's radiant eyes from a distance.
I give DC Direct an excellent grade on making good on its advertising for this figure.
Score: 10/10
2. Does the figure have much articulation (for display purposes)?
Honestly, I don't have any idea as to the number of articulation points this figure supposedly has. All I know is that it is at least functional in terms of basic movement. As a collector, my primary concern is that it can stand proportionally on its own using the enclosed display base w/o tipping over. I didn't have any trouble positioning the figure on the base, and it stands pretty much perfectly.
I will note, however, just like the `Infinite Crisis' version of Wonder Woman, this figure's hips are angled in such a way that one leg seems longer than the other. As a result, your choice of display poses is limited.
Score: 8.5/10
3. Do the figure's accessories enhance the figure?
The 'magic' golden lasso (the sole accessory provided, minus the display base) can be grasped in her right hand easily enough w/o falling out. However, unlike the `Justice' and `Infinite Crisis' versions of Wonder Woman, this one doesn't have any hook at her waistband to hold the lasso, so you are left without any choices as to where to display the lasso.
Score: 8/10.
4. Is the figure an excellent investment (or as a recommended addition to an action figure collection)?
Yes! If you can find it for a reasonable price, I highly recommend purchasing one. The other ones in this series I would recommend are Diana Prince (again, an exact likeness to the promotional photo) and Donna Troy as Wonder Woman (it's close enough to the photo).Unfortunately, I haven't viewed the Circe figure, which would complete the quartet, so I can't hazard an opinion on it.
Score: 10/10.
5. What do I think, overall?
If compared fairly to the various other Wonder Woman figures produced by DC Direct in the last few years, I would say this version is certainly a front runner. I would still give a slight edge to the `Justice' version for having a lasso hook and perhaps a little more pose flexibility. However, this figure has a simply wonderful visual look and meets all expectations one should reasonably have.
My final score: 9.25/10

14 Ghost World Enid Hi-Fashion Glamour Doll with Accessories
Average Reviews:

This is a very high-quality doll, very durable, and would stand up to a fair amount of abuse from a child. However, Ghost World, the graphic novel and the movie, are not kid's stories, so I doubt a young child would appreciate this as anything more than a girl doll. It is a very campy item for those who have read the books or seen the movie. Would make a great gift for the high school buddy who hasn't figured out where they're going yet, or finds the world a little too weird to want to be any part of it. A tribute to the creativity of Dan Clowes and this great character. Pretty creative box and accessories too.

DC Universe Classics Series 12 Action Figure Mary Batson White Outfit Variant Build Darkseid Piece Review

DC Universe Classics Series 12 Action Figure Mary Batson White Outfit Variant Build Darkseid Piece
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
DC Universe Classics wave 12 (or you could call it the Darksied series) skewed a little more obscure than some past waves. They also have some updated packaging. This is Mary Batson A/K/A Mary Marvel and sister of Billy Batson A/K/A Captain Marvel. Like a lot of folks she was given great powers by the wizard Shazam and can transform back and forth from her super powered persona by invoking his name.
For Kids:
If you're trying to get your little girl to be a geek this may be a good starter figure. Can't really say the Marvel Family of characters are nearly as well known as other DC characters (Supes, Bats, WW I'm looking at you) but she's an attractive superheroic teen - that's got to count for something. She is of course smaller than other figures in this line as is appropriate but that does make her slightly more fragile, most notably in the arms.
For Adults:
If you scored Billy Batson (Shazam I think they called him on the package) and Black Adam from previous waves then she'll fit in well with the group. What they've delivered here is a confident young superheroine standing straight and proud. The hair and cape are made to look as if blowing to the left in a breeze. They've done an outstanding job on the flow and wrinkling of the material on her shirt and skirt. The face is attractive and the details on her cuffed boots and on the cape are done well.
What I have here is the white uniformed version. The other is red. The white is nice and uniform and the yellow lightning bolt and details look good. The yellow edging is not 100% consistent and the yellow rope is a touch clumpy but otherwise it's all good. Her hair is brown and eyes blue.
Articulation wise she's got, ball pin shoulders, pin elbows, cut wrists, cut waist, pin knees and ankles and cuts above the ankles. Due to the hair sculpt she can only turn her head slightly to the left. She seems to have ball hip joints that allow her legs to turn up top but all other hip movement is pretty much hampered by the skirt.
All the figures in this wave come with a little collector button, the kind you pin to your shirt, with little comic pictures loosely related to the figure. Her only other accessory is her piece of Darksied - the biggest piece - the torso.
I think they knocked the sculpt out of the park and the paint is very good and there are only minor quibbles with the articulation and she's a classic character that will look good in a Marvel Family / Shazam set.
The Collect and Connect, Darksied, is a welcome addition to all the Fourth World characters. He stands a fairly impressive 8 ½" tall. His craggy skin looks just a touch soft to me in comparison with an older (but smaller) version of the character I have but he still looks pretty good. There's good detail despite that and even the bottom of his feet contain all that Fourth World circuitry. He's just as articulated as his smaller counterparts and even has a couple of accessories. One, he's got a Mother Box he can hold in his hand and that also will attach to the back of his belt. Two, he has an interchangeable right hand, one in the regular blue glove posed to hold the Mother Box and an open menacing golden gloved hand covered in circuits and machinery. He's not as impressive as I'd like but still a very good figure who deserves 4 stars.

Mattel DC Universe Classics Man-Bat, Wave 10 Action Figure. Review

Mattel DC Universe Classics Man-Bat, Wave 10 Action Figure.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Robert "Kirk" Langstrom develops an extract to give humans the sonar ability of bats and tests it on himself due to a developing deafness. But this is comic book land so OF COURSE he instead turns into a big crazy Man-Bat! On the up side I suppose that means the extract DID in fact give him the sonar so it did work. Sometimes when he takes the extract he can retain intelligence and be a good guy but most of the time he just goes on a rampage.
For kids:
Due to the character this DC Universe figure looks a lot different than most and it works really well. I couldn't imagine a kid (especially a little boy) who wouldn't like a big monster man-bat in the toy box. He looks monstrous, is well articulated and considering he exists in the Batman universe many kids probably know of him, from cartoons or comics. And this means he can be used to play with Batman figures. This guy is a win win for kids I would think.
For adults:
The sculpting is the standout here. From head to toe he's unique from the tips of his long bat ears to the toes on his clawed feet. His mouth is open in a shriek and there are even fine lines accentuating this. He's sculpted to give the appearance of a body covered in coarse hair and there is an extra piece on his back for the tuft of spine hair. He wears shredded pants and has clawed "bat" feet. The stand out of course is the winged arms. They are thin and long but don't feel too fragile. The large wings are tattered and sectioned to his forearms and hands/claws with a small piece on the upper arm. The overall wingspan is pretty impressive and the wings them selves are a translucent but sturdy plastic.
The skin color is brown with many highlights. In the face there is a lot of color, light and dark browns, painted teeth and mouth and red eyes. He has blue pants and the wings are translucent brown with tinges of yellow and his claws are black. Not one spot that looks out of place to me - although admittedly the wild nature of the character lends well to a little roughness. OK, there's one tiny spot of black on a wing I don't think is supposed to be there.
He's got a ball jointed neck although it can't look as far up as I'd like, ball and pin shoulders allowing the shoulder socket and the bicep to rotate, pin elbows and ball and bin wrists. All this arm articulation with the wings looks really good and dynamic and you can pull off flying poses, menacing poses and poses where he's draped his wings around him (a la Dracula). Very nice. He's got an ab crunch, cut waist, pin knees and pin "ankles". These last are situated where on a human the shin would be. He stands in an animalistic bent leg fashion.
His only "accessory" is a piece of Imperiex.
Great looking figure with an excellent sculpt and articulation that both kids and adults should love.
Imperiex is a pretty cool collect and connect (CC) figure. His is black and red armor and cape with lots of gold highlights and every surface is sculpted. It's really colorful while being imposing at the same time. His face is skeletal with exposed teeth and menacing red eyes in taught wrinkled skin. But he has two issues. One, his head pops into the neck on a really long peg that just drops down into his body so his head just kind of floats, what I mean is there is no tightness to the joint at all so it's like a bobble head if you move him around. A really weird choice - he looks fine standing still but you have to finagle the head around to get it just right. Second is his size. You see Imperiex is supposed to be a planetary threat and huge in size but you wouldn't know it from this nine inch figure. Yeah, I know the days of Galactus and Sentinel 14 to 16 inch figures are behind us (for now) but this guy looks like maybe some Fourth World warrior or something not the living embodiment of entropy. Even with all that he's still a four star figure though if only for the amount of detail they packed into him.

I would like to say that this Marvel Select Hulk Figure is possibly the best representation of the Hulk ever cast in plastic. The savage look on his face and monstrous proportions bring this comic beast to life. I received this figure from Big Bad Toy Store (The best Amazon Merchant for collectibles) and couldn't be happier. There are 14 functional poa's on this figure. His elbows and knees are ball jointed and hinged. His hips are balljoints and his shoulders. His sheer size restricts his poseability, but hey.....it's the Hulk. This guy stands about 10" tall and probably weighs close to 2lbs!!! Solid painting rounds out the package. So if you are on the fence about this one, don't be afraid, snatch him up immediately.

Yes, it's Batman, again. This Wave 10 sculpting should look pretty familiar by now, as Mattel's DC Universe Classics has used it before for previous incarnations of the legendary Dark Knight. Since it is an excellent basic sculpting of Batman's flawless physique, I see Mattel's point - why fix it if it isn't broken?
This time, Batman appears in an all-black version (with yellow trim) as a tribute clearly to the blockbuster 1989 movie starring Michael Keaton as Gotham City's caped crusader. For that reason alone, this figure is a must for Batman collectors, since finding high quality action figures representing Keaton's two bat-flicks is next to impossible. Suffice to say, the figure has decent articulation points for posing and holds up relatively well for kids at play time. I will note, as usual, the elbow joints are probably the figure's primary weak spot if a child is too aggressive bending and twisting him around.
Included with Batman are his batarang and portable Batcave computer.
Rating: 10/10 - Until Mattel and/or DC Direct acquire the rights for a movie-realistic version, this one is likely going to be the definitive figure celebrating Michael Keaton's unforgettable depiction of the Dark Knight.
P.S. An excellent companion figure for this Batman would the same wave's Joker.

DC Universe Classics: Series 10: Batman is accompanied by one of the pieces required to assemble the Build-A-Figure Imperiex. This version of Batman is clad in his sleek black uniform, complete with gold utility belt and molded plastic cape. Batman is a noted detective and strategist, and is among the most capable physical combatants on the planet. In addition to defending Gotham City against the depraved likes of Two-Face, Batman also faces imported threats such as Lex Luthor, in the course of which he is sometimes assisted by Catwoman and fellow Justice League member Superman.
