I've discovered that once you own a Silkstone doll, you want more. If you have a straight arm doll, then you want one with bent arms. With the many face molds, it is a pleasure that the Silkies features are closer to the original Barbie than so many variations that Mattel has brought into the doll world.
The doll world is very competitive, and to keep dolls affordable Mattel has broken the dolls into play line (generally up to $35.00) with quantities over 100,000 that are available just about everywhere. Next is the Gold Label, which is what Trace of Lace is, and it is limited to about 5,000 -- these are true collectible dolls. The Platinum label is limited to only 1,000 dolls, and highly sought after.
Silkstone is a mixture of granite and other elements so that it is very hard and much heavier than vinyl. Robert Best and Mattel came together to create Silkstone dolls. They wanted the absolute beauty of porcelain, but not its fragility. Silkstone is used as counter tops, floors, and many other items. It is #8 on the Mohn scale of hardness; #10 is diamond, the hardest element.
Using a product that will reproduce with the elegance of porcelain, but not the obvious possibilities of breakage, Robert Best has created some of the most gorgeous dolls Mattel releases.
Trace of Lace is stunning, and her dress is to die for (I love black lace). Silkstone dolls are thinner than their earlier Mattel counterparts, so your clothing for early Barbie's will fit, but they will be loose. The Silkstone clothing, however, will not fit the early Barbie bodies. Silkies can wear Fashion Fever clothing, and FF can wear SOME Silkier outfits.
Silkstone dolls are not articulated. Articulation is becoming more and more important in the doll world, so if Robert Best decides to articulate a Silkstone, look for many joints and excess pieces. Whereas a porcelain is not for play, and can even break when you remove the small plastic circles between the arms, legs and torso, you won't find this in Silkies. Some Silkies are even in the Play Line price range.
A bit of trivia: OOAK (One Of A Kind) artists have more difficulty rerooting the Silkies, but because of its durability, many are able to remove the head and turn a short haired brunet into a multi-streaked, long haired redhead.
I love Silkies! Wish I had all of them, but that's not possible. The do not mar easily. Their hair is saran and it is sleek and shiny. If you have never owned a Silkie, this is the one to buy. You willl love her -- 5 stars.

Barbie Dolls of the World: Princess of Ireland - Collector Edition Doll (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)Coming from an Irish family, I have accumulated many different types of Irish collectibles over the years: stuffed animals, Beanie Babies, glasses, books, jewelery...all with some sort of Irish theme. But until recently I didn't have any Irish dolls, porcelain or otherwise. I have been collecting Dolls of the World Barbies for a number of years, and more recently Princess of the World dolls, so I couldn't believe it when I found out that a Princess of Ireland Barbie would be made. I was nervous that the doll wouldn't "feel" Irish enough. So when I received her in the mail I was pleasantly surprised that she was even more beautiful than in the photos online. Her complexion is very fair, and her auburn hair is stunning in natural light. Her green eyes are sparkling and mysterious, and she wears a very light rose eyeshadow that makes her beautiful eyes stand out even more. Her costume is sort of a medieval/Celtic blend. She wears a velvety soft forest green cloak with a golden Tara brooch clasp, a traditional Celtic design. Her dress is a crinkly olive green fabric with a stripe of Celtic designs down the middle. At her waist she wears a belt of three golden medallions with Celtic designs, and on her head, perfectly balanced atop her auburn hair, a golden crown fit for an Irish princess. The box she comes in is also perfect for displaying her in. Appropriately enough, it is green (Ireland is actually a Viking word for green) with golden trim. The backdrop inside of the box is an Irish castle. There is information about the Celts on the back of the box. This is sure to become a treasured keepsake in my family, and I'm planning on buying more for relatives and friends.

Princess of Ireland is a special Barbie that has been crafted with style and loving attention to detail. She has green eyes, auburn hair, and fair skin. She wears a gorgeous cloak and dress ensemble in shades of deep green. The textured fabric has intricate Celtic designs add allure. Though this Barbie has obviously been designed with collectors in mind, there's no reason she can't be added to any Barbie fan's repertoire. The doll comes with a stand and a certificate of authenticity.

Barbie Fashion Model Collection (BMFC) - The Waitress Barbie Doll Review

(More customer reviews)This doll is unlike any of the other silkstone dolls, in that it is plain. I do not mean this in a bad respect, as I personally feel it's simplicity is what makes it so adorable, but you will not find glitzy jewelry or glamourous fashions here.
This doll is simply a waitress. Her outfit is lovely and oh-so reminisent of a 50's diner. In this case the doll's simplicity compliments the overall theme.
This is a very cute addition to anyone's collection, and I think at such a low price it's one that is hard to pass up.
As for my ratings, I gave this doll a 2 for durability because it is not designed for children. If you are thinking of it as a gift, personally I would recommend for children age 12+ who understand that this doll is designed primarily for display.

(More customer reviews)She is fierce!!!I bought this doll for my mother this past christmas and she loved it she was amazed at how beautiful and well made the doll and her clothes were Shes made from Slikstone which makes her kinda heavy and smooth like porcelain The details on this doll are great from the little buckles on the shoes her pearl earrings and black stockings to her black leather purse.Shes dressed in a very chic Chanel inspired white jacket and skirt trimmed in black with tiny black bows.There seems to be a black blouse underneath her jacket but if you open it up it's just a strip of fabric which i thought was a little cheap of them but not a huge issue I don't have any real problems with this doll other then her face not really resembling a african women's facial features but the designer of the doll Robert Best isn't known for using realistic features on his dolls They always have a small mouth and nose with really exaggerated eyes but that aside the doll is gorgeous and would be a great edition to anyones collection

Fashion Insider Ken Doll Gift Set Barbie Fashion Model Review

(More customer reviews)I love this Silkstone Ken. He's my one and only. Beautiful to gaze upon. It was months before I could bring myself to debox him as I wanted to enjoy him in his perfect "never-removed-from-the-box" state for as long as possible before I eventually caved and deboxed him. Dressing him was indeed a test in patience and dexterity of the hands and fingers. He comes already dressed in his undergarments and socks. Start dressing him with the shirt. Be careful not to get his thumb caught in the shirt cuff. Take your time so as not to tear the clothes. After you get the shirt on and snapped shut (2 snaps) then comes the blue tie. I had forgotten how to tie a tie, so I had to search for a diagram on how to do that. Don't be frustrated if you find you can't get his shirt collar to rest perfectly over the tie. You won't be the first that's happened to. Now come the trousers. This was the hardest for me because it was quite a struggle to get these snapped closed at the waist. I finally managed to do that. Then came sliding the belt through the belt loops and fastening the belt into the buckle. Take your time. Seriously. Remember you're doing this to have fun, now, right? Okay. Then comes the jacket. That's pretty easy. I haven't figured out how to get him to hold the briefcase, magazine and coffee cup. Maybe some clear adhesive tape will do the trick. Then place him on the doll stand that comes with this set and there you have it. All that's missing is a fedora. I wish Mattel had included a hat to give it all a complete look. Oh, and I wasn't sure what rating to give for "durability" because I don't really want to test how durable this Ken is by beating on him with a blunt object. He's much too lovely to mark up. So I compromised by giving 3 stars for durability. I am always careful with my dolls and treat them with tender loving care.

The doll is a high-quality Silkstone-bodied doll with rooted orange hair--and I mean orange!--styled in a side ponytail of cascading curls. Her facial screening compliments her aqua blue eyes perfectly, without quite being over the top or too much.
She comes dressed in a long, elegant white eyelet pantsuit, trimmed with a striking orange floor-length chiffon sash, matching strappy heels, and complementary turquoise jewelry, including a necklace, bracelet and earrings. A stand is also included.
Additionally, she includes another outfit: a short white eyelet belted skirt with a orange bodysuit, not currently shown in the photos here. (I'll have to take some and upload them.) Also included is a tiny silver tea service, including cups, saucers and spoons for four, a tea pot, sugar bowl and creamer, all on a silver tray--making her truly the perfect Hollywood Hostess.
This doll looks terrific redressed in turquoise, yellow, green and of course, orange. Try her in black, too. She's so much fun!
Some important FYI about Silkstone dolls in general: She cannot hold the tray without rubberbands on her wrists, and her only articulation (like all Silkstones produced so far) are her shoulders, waist and legs. She stands nearly 12" tall and won't fit most other regular-sized Barbie clothes, just so you know. (If you're new to Silkstone Barbies, this can come as a surprise). She is designed as a doll for a collector, not as a toy.
Seriously, though--her hair color and eye combination may seem shocking in the promo photos, but in person, she is simply smashing, and one of my collection's favorites. I adore her!
