Scrabble Upwords Review

Scrabble Upwords
Average Reviews:

I am an elementary school teacher and a child's vocabulary level has a high correlation to their reading comprehension. In a time of dropping vocabulary levels, this is a quick and easy game that has students checking the dictionary and expanding their vocabulary in a fun way. (I allow them to use the dictionary to check words or "find" words as they play.) I also "allow" them to expand to Scrabble and Upwords when they want more challenge. Students who never opted to play vocabulary games are now playing both of these.
I bought one game initially and just bought more so the whole class can play at one time. This is one way to expand their knowledge that they think is a reward.

Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride 1912 Expansion Review

Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride 1912 Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Anyone who owns Ticket To Ride : Europe probably already knows that it is one of the best of the Ticket to Ride games, with a map that creates interesting challenges and roadblocks.
The one drawback with Ticket to Ride: Europe is the lack of routes, with only about 45 or so routes (including only 6 'long routes'). After 20 or so playings, it becomes fairly easy to tell what long route someone is attempting at any time. In my view this expansion is essential, and to a large extent fixes what is the only drawback of Europe I can find.
Europa 1912 adds another 6 long routes. They are designed in such a way that it is now much more difficult to know which long route someone is attempting, no matter what long route they have. These routes are typically slightly shorter than the existing long routes, and worth 16 or 17 only. Also, all long routes now have a different back - good for finding them to shuffle and deal seperately, but everyone will know if you keep it or not!
Additionally, there are 19 more 'short' routes, and these are carefully designed to make those cities and tracks that are underutilised in the original game more important. In my view, with these cards there is a fairly good chance of use (and even of two or three players wanting the track) for any track on the board.
Lastly there is a large set of 'Big Cities' routes. As with both the above sets of cards, it is optional to use these cards. On these cards, nine cities are picked (London, Paris, Berlin, Roma, Athina, Wien, Madrid, Moskva, Angora) and a route is introduced between every combination of these cities. Since only a handful of these routes already existed, this brings in a large number of new routes. Some are short (Berlin - Wien is worth 3 points only) while Madrid to Moskva, worth 25, is the longest route in the game, despite not being a 'long route'. Using this set of cards significantly increases the importance of and the competition for tracks around those 9 cities. In my view this makes for a very different game. My preference is to always play with the other new cards, but to play with the big cities cards only when everyone is up for a cutthroat game.
All up there are about 55 new route cards, a significant expansion on the number there were in the original game.
The last addition is 'Warehouses' and 'Depots'. Descriptions of how this works can be found elsewhere on the web, and although they add a different element to the game, for me they are not the drawcard in this expansion.
All route cards from the original game are reprinted, but there are ways to tell them apart. It's important to note that some of the original routes will be found in the 'Big Cities' pack.
I recommend that everyone who owns Europe buys the Europa 1912 expansion. The extra routes are really worth the money, they make the game more even and less similar from game to game. Additionally, it was very hard for me to find. I suggest you buy now while you can - there is no guarantee with Days of Wonder that there will be a reprint!

Introducing a whole new set of Destination Tickets, Europa 1912 also brings three new variants to Ticket to Ride Europe:
Europe Expanded adds nineteen new routes to the game.

Warehouses and Depots are also introduced which include new game rules and pieces adding a new strategic level to any of the Ticket to Ride games.
Please note: This is not a stand-alone game. An original copy of any complete game in the Ticket to Ride series is required to play with the new Warehouses and Depots rule. The new Tickets included are for use only with Ticket to Ride Europe

Name 5 Game Review

My family, with kids ages 4-11, plus my parents, and I all enjoy playing Name 5! The mix of objective and subjective questions are fun and my kids love to think of creative answers to questions like "Name 5 reasons a person might fall down" and "Name 5 purple foods"! You don't have to be a trivia genius or creative genius to play - the game works for all levels of education and ability! They like playing in teams and being able to shout out answers rather than taking turns one at a time. The varied play based on the different spaces keeps the excitement going. We have the most fun with the flip flop spaces seeing how many ideas we can come up with for the same challenge. Policing ourselves is part of the fun. The most intense time is always at the end, to see which team can successfully complete a full card in 90 seconds to win! This game has become a favorite for Family Game Night and I encourage you to all give it a try. The rules are easy to understand too, and my kids mastered them quickly. When they play without the adults, they just skip the challenges that are too hard. Even though it says ages 12 and up, it's great to play all together because everyone can contribute. A definite must have for game night, whether with adults or mixed ages. Endless Games has created a winner here!

Ryan's Room Home Again, Home Again Review

Ryan's Room Home Again, Home Again
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We were initially attracted to the house's A-frame design. We wanted a dollhouse that would allow a few children to play easily in different areas of the house. The A-frame allows for this. We favor toys made of wood b/c of our concern for the environment, the safety of our children and we've found that they tend to hold up better than plastic ones. Although, we were disappointed with the flimpsiness of the wood that makes up the interior walls of the house. That Ryan's Room offers an extensive collection of furniture, dolls, etc. designed to be used with the house was also a big draw. We feel this will enable the dollhouse to grow with our 3-year old daughter through the years. The house is also simple enough to allow for my husband and I to add extra creative touches like shingles, additional flooring and paint for the walls. Overall, we are very pleased with the dollhouse.

Sorry Review

This game is a variation of Parcheesi. Rather than rolling dice to move around the board, you draw cards with numbers on them. However, some of the cards also have alternate instructions...such as being able to switch places with an opponent, split the count between two pieces, or move backwards to sneak into your home without having to go all the way around the board. Even very young children quickly learn to take full advantage of these options. I especially like this game because it's one of the few young children's games in which an adult can play seriously without "accidentally" making mistakes and STILL be beat by the 5-year-old! Action-wise, it's a little bit slow, but, hey...it sure beats Candyland!CAUTION: This may be the first time your children encounter sabotage as a game strategy, and tempers may flare. One of the most educational aspects of this game is that it gives you plenty of chances to talk about good sportsmanship and not taking a game too seriously. :o)

Since 1934, players of all ages have been chasing one another around the classic game board, trying to get their own four pawns from Start to Home. But it's not that easy, because you never know what the next card will hold: Will you move forwards or backwards' Will you hit a slide and shoot ahead, or will an opponent bump you back to start' For 2 to 4 players. For children who likes puzzles and mazes, this is a great find. To get the ice cream truck out of the traffic jam, the child must think on more than one level and more than one move ahead. Any wrong moves can be easily reversed and there is no penalty for wrong moves, only the thrill of solving the puzzle. Its great for solo play or for two to work together. The travel bag makes it a terrific "take along" toy -- as long as you have a flat surface on which to set up the board. My son is five years old and takes great pride in solving the simplest level puzzles. With a total of four levels of difficulty, I think we will be playing this game for some time to come.

We bought this game as a gift for my 11 year old who had already enjoyed the original version. The Collector's Edition has 156 puzzles. The only surprise was the size of the game itself. While the original version is portable for taking on trips, the Collector's Edition is a full size 15"x15" base with large pieces. There is a storage drawer for all the 156 cards. Blokus Classics Game Review

Blokus Classics Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally bought this game for my classroom to help my students develop thinking skills. When it first arrived, I took the game home to figure out how to play it before introducing it to my students--and I was hooked! My own children are ages 10 and 11 and they love the game (we are buying a game for home), but I teach students up to age 18 and they enjoy the game just as much. Educationally, it helps younger students develop a better understanding of spatial relations and planning ahead. For older students (and adults) it helps to develop various strategy skills.
Unlike most educational games, the rules are simple and once you've played it through one time (or watched it through one time) all your effort can go into plotting your moves. The game doesn't run out of possibilities, either; every game is different, even if you play with the same people over and over.
As an educator, parent, and game enthusiast, this was money well spent.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Blokus Classics Game

Fun for both kids and adults, Blokus is a strategy board game that challenges spatial thinking. Bright colors and simple rules make it ideal for ages five and up, but adults will certainly be engrossed by this unique and challenging game. Not Your Average Board Game Blokus encourages creative thinking and has received a Mensa award for promoting healthy brain activity. The goal of this game is for players to fit all of their pieces onto the board. When placing a piece it may not lie adjacent to the player's other pieces, but must be placed touching at least one corner of their pieces already on the board. The player who gets rid of all of their tiles first is the winner and strategic thinking helps as you block moves from your opponent. Blokus sometimes comes to an end because there are no more possible moves. Four players make this abstract game especially fast and exciting; however, it can be just as fun for two or three players. Blokus has come up with a number of different ways to play the game to make it more thrilling when playing with less than four players. Draft Blokus allows a player to use more than one color and Reverse Blokus reverses the entire game so that the person who places the least amount of tiles on the board is the winner. It can even be played in a solitaire version when one player attempts to place all of their pieces in a single sitting. A game of Blokus typically lasts a 30 minutes. As a practical feature, raised edges on the board help keep the tiles in place and allow convenient clean-up. This game includes 84 pieces in four vibrant colors, an instruction guide, and one gameboard with 400 squares.Blokus is simple to understand, but the game's complexity is revealed shortly after everyone begins to play. It can be addictive, even for those not normally into abstract games. Blokus is a catalyst for spatial thinking, as players form images in their mind before placing the pieces on the board. Children and adults can play together for hours of competitive family fun. As Europe's 2003 Game of the Year, Blokus is adored by many and even played in professional tournaments. What's in the Box 84 pieces in four colors, gameboard with 400 squares, and an instruction guide.

The American Girls Game: Trivia, Trade, and A Trip Through Time (American Girls Collection Sidelines)

I enjoy this game very much, but the reason I marked it 4 stars is because it's quite long, and near the end, it can get a little bit boring. I marked the Education 2 because even though the AG characters come from history, the game doesn't.To win, you must go home with 25 points (which you earn by answering the trivia cards right, Q# 1 gives you one point and etc. up to 3.) and at least three matches, which you can make with the trade cards you draw at every turn. You roll 2 dice to go through the game.

My 2-year-old son has 4 of the main Chicken Little characters in these plush dolls...not for cuddling but for character play. I do a pretty good Runt voice and even a decent Abby Mallard. He pretty much holds Chicken Little while I interchange Runt, Abby and Fish. He loves to act out scenes of the movie with them. They're cute, soft and fun if you like the Chicken Little movie (one of his favorites.) Good deal too if you find them on sale like I did for $3 each at the Disney store (but $6 or so for Chicken Little which was fine.)

Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries Board Game Review

Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries Board Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries is the same fun boardgame as the others in this series (don't bother with the dice or card version, however). What makes Nordic Countries different is that it combines and revises some of the more advanced rules from both Ticket to Ride Europe and Ticket to Ride Switzerland Map Expansion. You get ferry and tunnel routes like Europe and the locomotives are only usable on them from Switzerland. Ferry routes all require one or two locomotives to build. Unlike Europe or Switzerland, you can "crush cards" when building ferries by "crushing" 3 of any single color card into a locomotive and some of the ferries require you to use cards of a specific color. Tunnels operate the same as Europe; when you try to build one, flip the top 3 cards from the draw pile over; if any of them are the same color as the route you are trying to build or are locomotives, then you need that many extra cards of that same color and/or locomotives in order to build the tunnel. You also get a new vertical game board and ticket cards, of course, depicting Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland (plus a bit of Russia), as well as a bonus 10 point Globetrotter ticket awarded to the player with the most tickets completed at the end of the game. There is no longest route bonus as in the original game or Europe. The new map has a lot of short routes in the south and long routes in the north (including a 9 train route that is incredibly tough to build since locomotives do not act as wild cards on normal routes in this version). There are several diabolical choke-points up north where you can screw over the other players by cutting them off while other areas in the south (the big cities) have a ton of ways into them. You can expect a real challenge from this map and its new rule tweaks.
Like the out-of-print Switzerland, Nordic Countries is only playable by 2-3 players; if you are playing with 3 people then you can use the double routes just as in 4-5 player versions of the other games in this series. Once again, Days of Wonder delivers a deceptively simple, fun but challenging game sure to provide years of entertainment. Production values are durable, beautiful and excellent as usual except well over half of the tickets are confusing. Many of the vertical destination tickets have names of the cities listed in order of south to north or right to left, which is the reverse of how one would expect to read them, and this takes quite a bit of getting used to (note that the Marklin edition of Ticket to Ride, which also uses a vertical map, does not seem to have this problem with its destination tickets). I suppose the logic behind the decision is that the south is the heavily populated region with more available routes but it comes across to me as an incredibly bad design choice. Usually, big cities are listed first on a ticket so maybe that is part of the logic but it took actively staring at the cards and comparing them to the map to finally see some method to the madness. And it is madness, because every single player I've gamed with was totally confused by the tickets that had the aforementioned issues in game after game. Okay, so maybe Days of Wonder can say it's not a screw-up but a design choice, except the rule is not even applied consistently. A few tickets do not follow it. Another problem, which cannot be played off as a design choice, is that all seven of the tickets leading to Finland's capital of Helsinki erroneously point inland to Lahti, the city directly above it. I'm not happy with the destination tickets; they cause unnecessary confusion and time-wasting in what is otherwise an excellent game. It does does get a little bit easier once you play enough games and familiarize yourself with the foreign names and locations of the cities. Days of Wonder customer service didn't seem to care or even consider the tickets an issue when I contacted them.
Nordic Countries is especially handy for when I can't get 4-5 people to play (so we can use the double routes), but I am taking off one star from my review for the ridiculous ticket confusion. Regardless of the problem, after playing several games of it, I still prefer Ticket to Ride Europe (with the Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride 1912 Expansion) because the locomotives are true wild cards and it adds three stations per player you can place to avoid being cut-off by your opponents. However, there is nothing to stop you from adding the station rules to Nordic Countries or any other edition. In fact, I recommend it if you like your games a bit less cut-throat, although the station colors may not match up depending on which edition you are trying to integrate them into; different editions of the game use different colors for their trains (Nordic uses black, purple and white, for example). I also like the variety of Days of Wonder Ticket To Ride - Marklin which adds passengers for an extra layer of crazy bonus point scoring strategy, although this edition can be a bit fiddly due to the extra rules and probably shouldn't be your introduction to the Ticket To Ride series. The original Ticket to Ride is the simplest version but also the most frustratingly cut-throat unless you also get the Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride 1910 Expansion which gives you a lot more choices on tickets and customizing the rules to suit your group's play style (but it's still probably the most cut-throat edition even with the expansion).
